The Bill 62 debate is back

Re: The Bill 62 debate is back
Pah, if you care so much about subjugated women, get thee to Ireland or America, and do something about the abortion laws. Those are clear cut cases of societal oppression. Whether or not a person is making a free choice in adopting dress customary to the person's culture is a much too nuanced question to legislate and to force bus conductors to act upon.

Re: The Bill 62 debate is back
why do you focus on "required?" Why should women not be allowed to choose how they make a public demonstration of their faith, regardless of its documented requirements? Where in the Charter of Rights and Freedoms does it suggest that only "required" observances are to be permitted to Canadians?
You raised the issue below that you believe that the legislation won't survive a legal challenge. I believe that, for such a challenge to succeed, the challenger will need to show that one cannot practise their religion without being able to do so.
The issue of whether Sikh children could take knives to school was dealt with by the Supreme Court of Canada some time ago. Wearing a kirpan was deemed to be so intrinsic to the practice of their faith that they were allowed to do so. I believe this issue will be resolved by the Court in a similar way.

Who is going to police this new law?
According to several news interviews bus drivers won't do it, I suspect others won't either

Indeed. I have a window here. A woman just walked past wearing a headscarf, no veil, large Aviator sunglasses, not much face visible. She was walking towards the bus/train station. Should she be allowed on a bus or a train?

Most Transit drivers prefer to avoid confrontation and just drive the bus. I ride Transit and have seen drivers allow non paying passengers on a bus or if transit card expired ignored it.
There aren't enough Transit Inspectors to place on all buses all of the time.
So it will probably be left to the driver in most cases. Some will use discretion others can now exert their new power.
Im sure there might be the odd ugly incident but we will have to wait to see how this pans out.

If she was walking towards she might have also been walking past them so a non issue. Now entering is different but still not relevant as you are in Ontario and not Quebec so Bill 62 not in force.

I could find little about her but plenty of references to associations with or roles for various groups. And plenty of reason to cross the road to avoid her.
She sounds like she would be friends with Sarah Palin and that other one whose name escapes me.
Ah yes, Ann Coulter.
Because you recognised the name?

Whenever I see someone quoted, as if an 'authority' on a subject I often look them up for information about them.

The answer is that Islam is a religion, but not in the usual sense. Religion is defined as “a set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe; especially when considered as the creation of a superhuman agency, usually involving devotional and ritual observances, and often containing a moral code governing the conduct of human affairs.”
Islam is all of the above, but it is also much more. Islam is a way of life based on the guidance of God given in the books of God and the example of the prophets of God. Islam literally means peaceful “submission” (to the One True God).

Yes, well established anti-Islamic shit disturber, you may as well quote Donald Trump.
I amend the case of the woman walking. "Assuming we are whisked to Montreal, if she were to continue to the station and attempt to board a bus or a train, or indeed, a taxi, without making any amendment to her attire, should she be allowed to do so and, if not, who should be charged with the job of rearranging her clothing?".

If refusing to do so then denied access to the service possibly?
Could the Police be called possibly?
Could other passengers get involved and intervene with positive or negative results possibly?
As it happened yet? Possibly.
If the operator of the said conveyance ignored the new law could they be found in breach of their duties? Possibly.
Having not read the Act in its entirety and it doesn't affect my Province one would have to pay close attention to how the Act is worded and what can or cannot be done.

It's not about approval though, more so objectivity.
I am impressed though that within 7 minutes you can compose a response and offer an alternative source.

Well under the current law she could be refused access. Obviously if she wanted to use the service she would probably rearrange her own clothing till compliant.

When the train crosses the Quebec border are oafs to descend upon her? Has anyone given a moment's thought to how to practically enforce this discrimination?
