Bears and why you should stay in your car.

Back in the 70's in Yellowstone Park they figured out how to open the doors of Volkswagon Beetles by jumping up and down on the roof until they popped open. A black bear can run as fast as a race horse and has four paws and a mouth all full of butcher knives. Do not feed the bears.

I've come across a bear in town a few times, luckily each time they took off running in the opposite direction and showed no interest in bothering me.
Generally only see them on my street the night before trash day, they seem to know when the trash cans will be out and accessible.
My GF had a not so pleasant experience with a bear at her moms house, a mama bear came up the back door (glass) as my GF walked into the kitchen and the bear was not happy, luckily though bear didn't break through, just scared my GF and then left the area.

Myth, doesn't matter what grade they're on. They may be marginally slower going downhill but not enough to save you (not all race horses come in first). What really impressed me about their mobility is how they can run through the bush at top speed smashing trees 2" ( or close) in diameter over without seeming to notice them. The fact that they can only do that for a short time is cold comfort, (unless you're on a race horse in open terrain ) because in that short time can still go about 1/4 mile before appearing to slow down at all (that's only based on observation, not research).

Making noise is your best protection; as a young child I spent most of every summer at Waskiesu (Prince Albert National Park) and my friends and I walked everywhere chattering away in the bush and on the Kingfisher Trail (even eating the bears' strawberries and raspberries along the path ) and never had a problem and the place was full of bears. They had access to the dump for easy food (and our entertainment) and though they would come around to empty the bins at night or scratch at the door if we made popcorn no-one was attacked that I can remember.

They moved the dump way north of town away from trails and the golf course so there are fewer in the populated areas and you can't go see them any more. If I was going to be in a bear rich area I'd probably carry bear spray or a gun & maybe one of those freon powered air horns boaters use.

Reminds me of the joke about two friends hiking in the woods, when they come across an angry looking bear. One of the hikers takes off his backpack, takes out a pair of running shoes and starts to change out of his boots. His friend says "You're wasting your time, you can't out run a bear." "I know, I'm not planning to." the first hiker replied, "I only need to out run you!"

It's that half sandwich or muffin you were saving for later that can get you in trouble, last year someone was chased down the road because of his bag of Mcdonalds crap hamburgers.
