Re: anyone go RVing?
We've done it, and are doing it again in August. Absolutely love it. Not sure why AC has said it's more expensive than hotels and cars, unless the hotels are really awful I've not found that to be the case at all. Our first trip (across California/Nevada/Arizona) it was less than half the price of car hires and staying in pretty basic motels, and we got to stay in the middle of amazing National Parks rather than being in a Motel 6 on the outskirts.
We love it, but part of the reason is that it's so easy with kids, certainly a heck of a lot easier than a car and hotels. No packing/unpacking every night, no having to find somewhere to stop when a child announces they need a wee or some food, no having to entertain them etc. So perhaps it wouldn't have the same appeal if we were retired and didn't have the children.
I'm also not sure I'd want to do it for longer than 3 weeks personally.

The impression I got from the OP was that they intended to spend time travelling around to escape winter. I don't know how many would relish staying in some of the National Parks in the winter and the OP wouldn't need to hire a car.

I think it depends on what sort of RVing you are talking about. If it's load up and head off for a unplanned trip on the weekend in the summer, then forget it, every where is fully booked the year in advance.
If it's planning in advance and going south for a few weeks, it could be fun.

Choice places are booked well in advance .......... like this year for next year .............. if you're looking at warmer sunnier climes, such as AZ, CA, FL, Mexico, etc.
We used to camp a lot (tent), and always met many many Americans who drive north to Canada and Alaska in the summer, then head south for the warmer weather. We still see them on the roads, even though we no longer use the camp sites.
They almost all had very large super duper vehicles that guzzled a lot of gas!
Regarding the earlier comment about it being cheaper to go by car and motel .............
About 5 or 6 years ago, some friends rented an RV to go across Canada .......... they did it with another couple.
Their analysis at the end ................ with 4 people, the RV was cheaper than car and motel. It was much more expensive than car and motel if they had been on their own.

Re: anyone go RVing?
No need for camp grounds when in an RV. All you need is to locate a Wal Mart. Lol

People retire that way in Aus. Although mostly with Caravans, they spend years travelling around. Called Grey Nomads here.
The main question is either using powered sites or going fully self sufficient with solar panels and batteries, therefore free camping.
I'll show you ours, someone show me yours
BIG4 Tathra Beach Holiday Park Tathra | Family friendly accommodation at Tathra, NSW
Lake Placid Tourist Park – A place for those adventurous by nature
Bendleby Ranges — 4WD Tracks, Bush Camping and Accommodation
Palm Grove | Holiday Resort
Gives you an idea of how it's done in Aus, I'm wondering how it compares to over there.
Would love to give it a go in Canada for 3 months or so.
