I love the comments. One wonders whether any of them have actually been outside of their own Province.

Grain of salt though.:p

So why do my colleagues in Edmonton and Calgary always get annoyed at how much warmer it is in BC when I talk to them every morning:confused: The areas where Alberta wins are number of hours sunshine and amount of rainfall. Where I would say Alberta loses out is that it has colder weather (5 to 8 degrees colder on average in any given month) higher winds and way more snowfall than BC.

i dont think Calgary or Edmonton are 5 to 8 degrees colder than Vancouver during the summer months,,that's would mean BC summer average is into the 90s every day...but Alberta from my experience is sunny all year around and it neither rains much (apart from summer t/storms)..i bet away from the coast BC gets a lot more snow than Alberta.

A Calgary/Edmonton summer evening tends to be cooler than a Van/Vic summer evening. Ocean, altitude and all that.

I would imagine that the difference in temperature between Calgary and Edmonton could easily be 5/8 degrees each day, at any time of the year.

As I said, take such surveys with a pinch of salt. How each person feels about their location is all that matters.

In the Okanagan in summer it is pretty much in the 90s every day (hence the forest fires each year.) It's not unusual for us to have 2 weeks where it is at 40C each day (104F.) You can see the difference from these charts: http://www.livingin-canada.com/climate-calgary.html for Calgary and http://www.livingin-canada.com/climate-penticton.html for Penticton. The Vancouver charts are shown on the same website.

Nowhere in Canada has particularly fantastic weather overall but I do agree Calgary is probably the best of the major cities. But on average there are 190 days with temperatures below freezing (not all day) and 4 days with temperatures above 30 C, which is bloody cold by any reasonable standard. (By comparison, Fargo, ND has 179 days with temperatures below freezing and 15 days with temperatures above 30 C.)

In the Fraser Valley and Victoria it rains too much, everyone goes on about the Okanagan but you get milder winters at the cost of it being overcast all the time. Saskatchewan and Manitoba are even colder, in Québec it rains a lot too plus it's also colder during the winter, and the Maritimes get huge amounts of precipitation and if you're really lucky you get hit with a hurricane.

Which is why southern Ontario had traditionally been the favourite place to move to. Milder winters than Alberta but they do get a lot more snow because of the lakes. Also warmer summers.

What annoys me the most about Alberta (other than the obvious one - being cold) is the lack of AC during the summer. You might only need it in July and August but you need it.

Where do you find it lacking? Most large buildings have it; most vehicles have it; those that can afford it have it at home too.

Before we moved, we were quoted $3,500 to have it installed in our house. Doesn't appear prohibitively high.

Depends if you like the cold and snow. If not, my vote is for Victoria.

Victoria gets half the rainfall of Vancouver and it's in the form of rain not Vancouver drizzle.

If you come from the UK to Calgary then you dont need AC in your house because you dont miss what you have never had and it doesn't get overly hot during the summer for long periods...if you have had the luxury of AC before then it does become a necessity of sorts.

Lake effect snow only happens frequently in very specific locations. Why else do you think housing in Barrie is so cheap?

Did not know that about the Okanagan, that the winters were grey and overcast. Doesn't sound very pleasant.

If you really need AC in Alberta, just get it. Nothing to be annoyed about.
