Walking dogs off leash
Hi there,
I have recently moved to KL and will be working in the Mid Valley area. My wife and I are hoping to bring our Border Collie over but he really needs a park where he can be let off leash - i have had trouble finding any of these on the internet. Does anyone know of any such parks or areas in KL? The closer to Mid Valley the better obviously
Cheers
Will

Dogs are considered 'unclean' in Islam and most if not all condo bylawss do not allow dogs to be kept on their premises or outside the owners flat.
So I would say that a dog used to the western 'standard of living' will not have a good time here.
Here an article regarding a recent event...

I would not bring a dog to Malaysia unless prepared to have him indoors most of the time. Or as a watchdog for a landed property.
In Islam dogs are considered unclean, not to be touched etc.
Recently there was a campaign 'touch a dog' to make people aware of the plight of the stray dogs. It has been heavily criticised by the muslim community as blasphemic, etc.
Also most if not all condos have very restrictive bylaws regarding the keeping of dogs.
Allinall, I don't believe that a dog used to a 'western lifestyle' would be happy in Malaysia.

Our chinese hairdresser has 3 dogs, keeps them 99% indoors only because of healthy reasons, he said. Sometimes in the morning you can see some walking their dogs e.g. in few districts of Penang, but in general it is uncommon in MY.
Best you can do, ask your neighbors and colleagues regarding this case.

Midvalley is a very built-up and congested area. There are plenty of offices, hotels, shopping centres, highways and rail lines, but no parks.
Any parks in KL (and there are not many) have "No Dogs" signs at each entrance. Malays would be horrified at the thought of a dog running loose in a park and coming close to themselves or their children.
As Gunnar45 has mentioned, condos will generally not allow pets (especially dogs). Even landed properties would cause problems, as neighbours would not welcome the presence of a dog in their neighbourhood. It is not unheard of for neighbours to poison the dog.
Having said all that, some forum members have brought dogs with them. Please do a search to find these older threads. You will get some useful information there. I have the feeling the dogs in question were much smaller than yours, and therefore did not require as much exercise.
In general though, a dog in a park would be almost as unwelcome as a pig in a mosque.

Re: Walking dogs off leash
Yes, Penang is quite different. I have seen many dogs either being walked (always on a lead), or in the front garden of landed properties. I think it is a fair bet to say these dogs were owned by Chinese people rather than Malays.
In KL, fewer people live in landed properties and Malays form the majority of the population. I rarely see dogs. I have seen one "street dog" and a few in landed properties in the outskirts. I have never seen one being walked. However, as I mentioned previously, some expats in KL have brought dogs with them, as can be seen from older threads in this forum.
You're right to suggest the OP should ask around. Even a simple Google search for "KL dogs" brings up a lot of interesting sources of help and advice.
