Yes, like try to get hold of a large mud crab for example.
Almost all the premium catch is sold to Singapore or other rich neighbours.

After trying fish from Tesco and wet markets in Pg, I've given up. Non are as fresh as those I get in HK. Neither are the local crabs which are mostly skinny and rely on the gravy which means quite costly to pay for so little protein and having mostly shells and gravy.
Prawns and squids are still ok though still not as fresh.

As I said, the freshness can be checked by looking at the fish eyes and gills.
Sometimes, but not often even Tesco has some nice fish.

Same here. None of the fish tastes as good as it did back when I lived in Japan. Many of my Japanese acquaintances in Penang are suffering in silence.

Is it down to climate? The fish don't just keep very well?

Hi SushiFan,

Maybe try Miraku, the Japanese restaurant at G Hotel on Gurney Drive in Penang. They have seasonal fresh fish from Japan...

Thanks. I have been there a few times for the lunch buffet. Their sushi did not really convince me. Dry and rubbery. But I admit that some of the other dishes at the buffet tasted good.
