Default Shipping Belongings To Penang, Malaysia

Hello Everybody!

I am new to this forum but have so many questions regarding moving to Malaysia. My husband and I have just applied for MM2H visa. And the question we have is regarding the shipment of our belongings to Malaysia.

We don't wanna carry too many suit cases with us, but we also don't have any address in Malaysia yet to ship out suit cases to. Are there any storage services that our belongings could be shipped to and stored until we pick them up when we find and rent a place?

Thanks in advance!!!

I know that such services do exist in case you transport furniture and household items. But I don't know whether it also applies for some suitcases.

Hi Jorbobean,

you can rent storage space in Penang - just google it. But you would need to be here for custom clearance otherwise they might reject it and send it back. It is also advisable to wait till your MM2H is approved for duty free import of household and other goods, which is usually only one time possible.

Hi,
We lived in the Netherlands but used Pickfords. They took care of shipping our stuff to KL (we did not need to be there when it arrived). It then went into longterm storage where it has been for the last 20 months whilst we travel. Every three months we receive a bill from them - Our 8 cubic metres costs us 294 USD for 3 months.
I would imagine that Pickfords could do the same in Penang.

Hi Fenella, was your MM2H approved already or did you have another visa which was known by the Pickfords?

Hi kebi,
By the time our stuff was shipped we had the MM2H. I think you would need it in order to be able to import your belongings duty free.

Yes, if you have MM2H your goods can be cleared by a forwarder. If you don't custom may reject goods or impose a hefty duty if one is not around to explain and negotiate.

Yep - Another of the advantages of MM2H - We were very pleasantly surprised at how easily and smoothly the whole removal went.

Yes of course we will wait for the outcome of MM2H, just was hoping to make a plan a bit in advance. Thanks for the advice everyone!

Is that a new requirement Kebi? One time?

I have friends who brought household stuff in from several different locations over several years. (Lots of homes, rich lah)

I think it is a formal requirement which always has been around.
But as long as one is politeit is not necessarily enforced

as Gunnar states the official ruling is one shipment or if not possible a few within a short time frame. Lately custom is more generous especially with foreigners, but if one has a bad day you might get problems.

Same here. I used Pickfords International and it was all very straight-forward. I held my goods in storage in the UK and when I got the MM2H Visa sent Pickfords a digital image and the goods got moving.

Not sure how you will do the customs clearance without MM2H though, or am I misunderstanding?

If all you are bringing will fit into boxes/suitcases then I would recommend Seven Seas Worldwide and their movecube service. See it here Seven Seas Worldwide Shipping United Kingdom - International Shipping Specialists. We used them and they were very happy to ship to Penang with no address on the basis that there was plenty of time to get here, find a rental and inform them of the address before the package landed in Malaysia. The whole thing was very smooth with no hold up in customs.
