State bent on curbing traffic congestion

For a smoother drive: Upgrading work has started on Jalan Masjid Negeri between the roundabout in Jalan Tunku Kudin and Jalan Delima.

Attempts to lessen traffic jams will be done with more projects aimed towards improving public transport over the next few years.

Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said road widening projects and improving public transport would be done at the same time by the Penang Island City Council (MBPP).

“A Request for Proposal (RFP) has been called for the project delivery partner. The relevant projects will be carried out gradually by the end of the year or early 2016,” said Lim at the launch of the upgrading work between Jalan Masjid Negeri and the Jalan Tunku Kudin and Jalan Delima round-about.

The upgrading effort was part of a RM22.6mil project to lessen the traffic jam at several areas within the island.

MBPP mayor Datuk Patahiyah Ismail, who was also present, said the project was to improve the roads and traffic flow.

“Upgrading has been done in Lebuhraya Thean Tek and the Lorong Batu Lanchang intersection, Jalan Air Itam which intersects with Jalan Masjid Negeri, Jalan Scotland, Jalan Gottlieb, part of Jalan Bagan Jermal and Lorong Batu Lanchang.

“The completion of upgrading projects since 2011 has lessened the traffic in Jalan Masjid Negeri and the surrounding area,” she added. - The Star

The light rail transit (LRT) project is expected to be completed in 2030.

Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said that all the LRT lines and routes should be ready by that year.

“The LRT project will pass through Batu Kawan, linking up the mainland and the island to ensure that Seberang Prai will not be neglected.

“This is what differentiates the Penang Transport Master Plan from previous plans to ease traffic congestion in Penang,” Lim said.

Lim was speaking at a press conference after witnessing Eco World chief executive officer Datuk Chang Khim Wah accepting the letter of award for a mixed development project on a 129.4ha site in Batu Kawan from Penang Development Corporation (PDC) general manager Datuk Rosli Jaafar here yesterday.

Also present was Eco World chairman Tan Sri Liew Kee Sin.

Lim said the state government would call for another request-for-proposal (RFP) exercise to develop a theme park next to the Eco World’s proposed mixed development project.

He said the state government was committed to turning Batu Kawan into the most modern satellite township in Malaysia.

On the Eco World mixed development project, Lim said about 60.7ha would be for the development of a golf course.

He added that the Eco World project known as Eco Marina would be a gated and guarded strata township scheme that would set a new benchmark for residential, lifestyle, and commercial developments in Penang. - By The Star

Looks like the City of Dreams has got the nod of approval. Holy moly, that's going to be an eyesore. Though we are used to eyesores in Tanjung Tokong

I've noticed that they are really cracking on with the outer ring road link from Jalan Seri Tg Pinang (the road that goes past Island Plaza on way to Straits Quay). Presumably to make access for all this building.

I think the Penang high-end condo bubble will burst long before this development gets completed. Penang is not a financial centre like Hong Kong or Singapore.

Perhaps they've not noticed there’s a huge over-supply already. Or China’s meltdown, property downturn, manufacturing overcapacity, high levels of local government debt, and growth at a 24-year low, and the effect this will have on Malaysia.

With the collapse in the oil price the timing does not look good. I just hope the government made sure that the finance is in place to complete this project and that it is not reliant on sales.

Errk.....imagine a rare power-cut. They don't happen too often in Penang but not totally unheard of. All those stairs to climb up.

Or a little shakey shakey tremor from Sumatra. Had one of those a couple of years ago and, can tell you, was really swaying at 20+ floors up.

Cracking on is not exactly the phrase I would use, it seems more snail's pace to me. They are tacking on a few more villas at the end of Straits Quay at the moment but it's possible to work out now where the City of Dreams will be sited, pretty much perpendicular to the new ring road. From Marina Bay the view will be end-on as the buildings are narrow and in-line but from Island Plaza direction the two buildings will be side-by-side and will block out most of the view towards Gurney.

The real losers are the villas to the south of Straits Quay (Denai Endau) who will have a 40 storey building looming over them!

Just to add that it looks like they plan to start the City of Dreams pretty soon now - a large platform of concrete clocks presumably presages a mega-crane being installed - Oh Joy!

Also gone are the two open parking lots at each end of Straits Quay. Looks like a road is running between the fenced off parking lot and the row of Terrace By the Sea.
The whole of SQ looks cramped and with more high density condominiums planned for the land opposite Tesco this area will be very congested.

Land reclamation along the 2km Gurney Drive waterfront will start end of this year. There will be parks and recreational areas along it with condominiums mostly concentrate at the other end near Eden seafood.

China firm bags RM2.3 billion E&O land reclamation job

PETALING JAYA: Eastern & Oriental Bhd (E&O) has awarded China Communications Construction Co Ltd a land reclamation contract worth RM2.32 billion for Seri Tanjung Pinang Phase 2 in Penang.

The letter of award (LOA) issued to China Communications Construction’s local unit, Communications Construction Co (M) Sdn Bhd yesterday is an acceptance of the tender to reclaim Phase 2A of Seri Tanjung Pinang Phase 2, an area of about 384 acres, inclusive of the 131 acres of Gurney Drive’s foreshore (Package 1), for RM1.035 billion.

The reclamation works are expected to be completed in 30 months’ time.

“The LOA also includes the conditional award for the proposed land reclamation works for the remainder of Seri Tanjung Pinang Phase 2, made up of Phase 2B and Phase 2C covering an area of approximately 507 acres (Package 2),” said E&O.

Package 2 is worth about RM1.285 billion.
