Default Dishwasher Salt in Malaysia

Dishwasher salt has proved very elusive in Penang. To me at least.
Until today that is, when I found Essential Waitrose dishwasher salt granules in Cold Storage, Gurney Plaza for the first time. Hurrah!

Perhaps salt is unnecessary as the water where I live isn't too hard. But I prefer to use it anyway.

When we bought our dishwasher some 4 years ago, I tried to find out whether the water was hard or soft here in Penang. But I did not manage to get any stright information, seems to be a state secret somehown.
But gathering from the lack of calcium residues in cooking utensils, coffeee machines, etc I gather that the water is not hard at all.
So we haven't used any salt at all and so far no problem.
I guess one could every now and then run a cycle with some vinegar spirit added...

Good idea. Here's how:

I remember being very surprised by how much junk was trapped in the spinning arm of the dishwasher in the house we rented in the UK for six months before moving to Malaysia. Worth checking perhaps.
