I don't think many British expats on this site actually follow the cricket, but it's worth noting that England has just beaten South Africa in a Test. Comfortably. I won't clog up the post with the scores, though...

Sad news for the game.

Batting legend and former NZ Captain Martin Crowe has passed.

This book review (Chris Gayle's autobiography) from Cricinfo might be an interesting read. I haven't read it myself yet, but will start looking for it.

This is a clever piece of writing on today's Test Match from Sri Lanka. Read it and smile!

Jon Hotten on playing a single-wicket game at Broadhalfpenny Down | Cricket | ESPN Cricinfo
This is a wonderfully entertaining report on "Single Wicket Cricket" in the mid-1800s, in England. I don't think I'd ever heard of the sport before, which seems to have flourished in the developmental days of the game that we now call cricket. The single comment below the article tells us about the rules (?) of "French Cricket". Nice.

A really, really close shave in Bangla Desh yesterday! I was hoping for a BD win, of course, but the survivor didn't show much sense in exposing his tail-enders to England's top bowlers. Ah well... I can remember when New Zealand took decades to win their first Test match, so there's hope for the Bungalows. One of these days!

Lovely, too, to hear that Zimbabwe is fighting its way back to competitiveness. Nothing else seems to be happening in the country that's any good, so it would be great to have them back in the fold.

The West Indies Second XI getting hammered in a Test again, poor buggers: by Pakistan, this time, in Kingston. Sigh.

Is anybody else following the Pakistan v West Indies Tests? Some pretty sad cricket being played. Unless the WI administrators and Test selectors abandon their requirement that WI cricketers play in the inter-island matches, I don't see the WI ever getting back to where they once were. I understand the bosses' reasoning, but the whole situation reminds me of the Packer revolution, when Australia was in danger of collapsing as a Test nation.

The TV commentators at the Test Match from Dominica today were talking about helmets. Geoffrey Dujohn reminded us that his hey-day was in the earliest days of helmets with grills, and he never liked them. Musing on the subject some more, he added, "We had much better hookers in those days". Radio silence for five or six seconds, before he came back on the air with, "I'd like to re-word what I just said. Batsmen played the hook shot a lot better."
