It's just a political chess move. It will force migrants to enter Europe through Romania or Croatia and then Hungary can just send them back to those EU countries as they will have entered them 'first'. It's a retaliation for countries like Austria and Germany sending migrants back to Hungary.
I don't think it will make any difference to the movement of migrants just make the trip a bit longer and if anyone thinks otherwise they are being fooled by the media.

To be honest I didn't know that such fences were not there already. I regularly have to stop at the border crossing between Hungary and Croatia but have wondered if there are dirt track roads where you can cross without challenge. I wonder if there are places where you could buy a field each side of a border and make your own crossing?

Yesterday is Budapest protesters against the new Board Fencing many were unaware that works had started the fencing ironically is maid by Prison Inmates in Hungary and should be completed by November I will add if we Travel to there Country then we have to have injection against Disease so why wen they cross over they should be injected against spreading anything they could carrying.. But more worrying is how many belong to silent activities against others digger47

Hungary is in the Schengen zone and Croatia is not, hence the border still between the two. I imagine Croatia will enter the Schengen zone in the not too distant future, at which point the border controls will disappear, as they already have between Hungary and Slovenia.

The fence between Serbia and Hungary is a political symbol. I see nothing wrong with the external border of the EU being secured, and in fact I'm surprised that Hungary isn't actually considered responsible for protecting it. It's all about the timing – it coincides with pro-Putin rhetoric from Orbán, posters going up saying "Ha Magyarországra jössz, tiszteletben kell tartanod a kultúránkat", and that kind of thing.

As I see it, it's not unlike the Tories' "In the UK illegally? Go home..." vans in immigrant areas. It looks like a law-and-order issue but it smells of xenophobia.

And I agree with cathyg: anyone who has made it from Afghanistan to Serbia on foot isn't going to be stopped by a Hungarian fence.

Just think of all the things migrants could try .... I remember two german familes (might have been only one in the end) using a hot air balloon to get over the Berlin Wall .....just imagine the Hungarian Border Guards watching in amazement as a family of migrants try the same thing .....
