I am currently a Civil Servant at the Identity & Passport Service in the UK. I meet the criteria for these positions but unfortunately I no longer have a visa to work in the US. Would the British Consulate sponsor a British Citizen to gain clearance to take up a job? I would imagine that it is not easy to find US citizens or even ex-pats out there with 'a sound knowledge of UK Immigration Law.'

Unfortunately you wouldn't be considered. The Embassy no longer sponsors visas and, as such, you would need to have an existing right to work in the USA to qualify. There is an exception for more senior posts on a case by case basis, and the job advert will always indicate this. As for your last point, you'd be surprised at who is out there with the knowledge we are looking for...
