Does anyone know if there is any way I can pay a sterling cheque either into a UK bank account from here in Italy, or into an Italian bank account?

Posting it to your bank is the cheapest way. Ideally with a paying in slip. Just take a photocopy in case.

I've rung the company involved and persuaded them to pay the cash direct into our UK account so it is sorted now, thanks anyway though.

You can pay a sterling cheque into an Italian/euro account, but it costs - a lot.

Well most UK banks did and I know Natwest still do. You need to address it to your own branch with a paying-in slip but as long as you've written your name and AC number on the back it should be fine.
