Re: Retirement to Sicily
I finally received my S1 form today, two months to the day after applying for it. And the document itself says "Healthcare cover only commences from the date shown on your S1 once it has been registered. Sometimes registration may take several months." So if I die of a heart attack or stroke, at least my family will know why. Governments (and banks, as a side comment) act as if computers hadn't been invented: we all know that the transmission of data is instant, but they enjoy making us miserable.

Freddy, you have your S1 ... good. Make sure you keep a copy of it somewhere safe. I'm sure even without it you would get treatment... just relax my boy and enjoy!

When we took the S1 forms to register for health care we were asked which doctor we wanted to register with so it may be worth researching this before you go. The 'tessera sanitaria' health card arrived within a couple of weeks.
