We are applying for Residency and with the help if our translator submitted what we thought was the complete paperwork only to be told our marriage certificate needed converting to one Italy recognises for this purpose. Despite buying our house and subsequently more land the znotry has accepted all of our documents including the marriage certificate but now it seems this isn't enough and I or maybe both of us have to visit the Italian Consulate in London to 'convert' this. Has anyone had this problem and while trips back TL the UK do happen I'd like to know beforehand what exactly is entailed. Words such as 'Apostalising' have cropped up more than once. A word I'm not familiar with and our translator us suggesting that her translation of our marriage documents may also not be enough. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. (Trying to get thru on the phone on the designated hours isn't easy). Grazie

Think your translator has it wrong (or I have) in the translation, but gather what you need is your marriage cert translated AND sworn as true at the tribunale with the relevant bolo (stamp). I assume there is no oddity about the marriage cert and is from an acceptable place/country?

We were with our translator at the Anagrafe when the paperwork was assessed. It's the marriage cert (all perfectly normal and above board) that wasn't on her 'list' or countries acceptable and we understood as did the translator that we have to go to the Consulate! Confused isn't the word...

If they want a document with an apostille then theres nothing youcan do about it. You will need to send it/order one and then send it to Milton Keynes to have it apostilled, at which point your translator can translate both it and the apostille and swear it at an italian tribunale. Its the first time Ive heard of a comune being so pernickety.

The apostille is something which is fairly straightforward to organise, you can request it (and of course pay for it!) online via the gov.uk website. Doesn't take too long, then you get the certificate back with a piece of paper attached to it that is an official declaration saying that your marriage certificate is indeed valid. I guess these documents vary so much from one country to another that - a bit like English shops with Scottish bank notes - people don't know what a genuine one would look like.

Once you've got that sorted, the translator will translate the contents of the apostille and the whole lot will be sworn at the tribunale.
