Default Re-registering an EU car while waiting for Residenza

We have a French registered car that we need to insure here in Italy very soon. We are applying for Residenza (both have UK passports). Just waiting for certified translations of our English financial and health care documents as required to continue the process. We have our registered rental contract for 4 years, and our Codice Fiscale. My husband read somewhere (but cannot remember where) that someone was able to register their car with only their Codice Fiscale. has anyone else heard of this or any other way to get temporary insurance?
