Motorbike registering in Italy from UK
Hello everyone,
Has anyone had a recent experience in re-registering a UK motorbike to the Italian plates? How expensive it was and how long it took?
Thank you

Itll take a couple of weeks, but you need to be in ITaly and resident in Italy.

Thank you modicasa for the reply, two weeks sounds good.. I understand about the residency requirement, we will apply for that once we get there. Do you know whether the bike will have to go through the Italian version of MOT? Obviously the headlight has to be adjusted.. Also the price if you have an experience with that?

The bike will have to tweaked to be legal in Italy, and have Italian plates - these things usualy are based on size of engine, but just the plates will cost you 250 plus. It will have to be 'tagliata' (MOT'd) Time will depend where you are in ITaly, bizarrely it will take longer in the north than the south, given the volumes. But, as I said before, you need your residency before you begin - so you can ride on UK plates for 6 months and then need to reregister.

Re: Motorbike registering in Italy from UK
I attempted to do this a few years ago and gave up. However it depends very much on what bike you have and if the model was (or is) sold in Italy.
My bike was a 1960s Triumph and I couldn’t get the technical specification sheet that the Italian authorities asked for (as Triumph had closed as bankrupt), the concept of age related plates doesn’t seem to exist in Italy so the bike would have to have been "modernised" with flashing indicators etc. and meet modern emissions and braking rules at best this would have demolished the resale value and at worst would be impossible. The estimate to achieve this was around €800 (just the paperwork).
However, if you have a modern bike, the like of which is sold in Italy; it should be achievable. €800 plus some technical changes such as the head light and speedo readout, you should be able to get a sticker for the latter.
It seems to me that unless you have a Ducati 916, an MV Agusta F4 or something you are sentimentally attached too it’s probably not worth it.

Chris120,
Thank you very much for sharing your experience.. very useful for us.
Our bikes are not as vintage as yours but nevertheless quite old: Honda VFR800 18 years old, Honda ST1100 tourer 20 years old with 170k miles on the clock and Yamaha Fazer600 with 35k miles on..So there is food for thought.
We shall try to re-register one of them first and then decide..will let you know

i think all the bikes you have were sold in Italy so its possible, all vehicles in Italy are classified as EURO 1, 2, 3 etc you may be able to look up the classification somewhere and see if you might have problems with emissions testing. you should also consider the cost of getting the bikes to Italy if you ship them, if you ride them out there are also costs and that depends very much on where you are going to live.

Hi Molly100,
Yes, we have registered the bikes via Motorizzazione Civile...kind of like a DVLA. They have a website and depending on the area you live in they will have offices not too far. On their website it will tell you what documents you need and which forms to fill, also how much money to pay. It was total around 60Euro in 3 different payments. We just went to the offices and asked for help (we didn't speak much Italian, so wrote what we wanted on the piece of paper. They were very helpful. Our bikes are also old so we only needed the V5, MOT (ours was an expired one) and your own ID (passport, Italian DL). You will have to go through Collaudo (a bike/car check) , they will print the requirements for your bike (tyre size), check lights, we had to do an emergency stop which was strange but the most important thing is that the speedo has to have km (usually UK bikes have both km/miles) and also the counter has to be in km (if it is digital) if not digital you have to convince them that the mechanic in the UK changed it to km ;-) . They will give you the number plate in a couple of days, then you have to officially register the bike (put it on the system), you have to ask them where you need to go. in the ACI we only paid the road tax.
Sorry, I'm a bit rushed..going away for 10 days so will only be able to reply after that if you have any questions.
