Hello,

The best way to arrive from Catania is to take the autostrade for Palermo (A19) Then the A20 for Messina and come off at Cefalu.

After the toll keep right and head toward Cefalu that will take you about 3km and you will see a petrol station on right and Hotel called S- Lucia/ Sabia D'oro. If you park outside there or across the road we can meet there.

Would you be staying in Cefalu the night as its around 3 hours back to Catania ? They have some lovely wines in Sicily so it would be a shame to drive? I can book you into a very cheap and sweet hotel on the sea front?
Around 70 euros inc breakfast. If you would like to do that then I can give you instructions on how to get there and we can start from there?

Let me know

Smile Help!Anybody in Sicily, Modica.

Hello,

I am in Modica for the next 6 weeks. I have recently separated from my wife who is staying in Cambridge. I have a small house here in Modica Bassa. I am looking to find some people to talk to and share experiences with, especially learning Italian. My brain is refusing to keep any of it in there at the moment! At present I have found it difficult to find ways of mixing with the locals, my bad Italian is one reason. I have to go back to England in September to complete a CELTA course. I then Intend on coming back to Sicily to teach English. some background on me. For 12 years I was an Archaeologist (Roman), then for 11 years a Primary School teacher and lastly I went back to University gained another degree (BSc(Hons), Computer Science). I worked for an Internet Security company for 8 months, but left that job due to the breakdown of my marriage. I hope to meet some people here on Sicily, this is where I would like to spend the rest of my life and maybe one day meet someone to share my life with. Please feel free to contact me, or not, lol. My Email is [email protected], I am on MSN as [email protected].

Hello everyone!

I'm Angela and I will be moving over to Sicily in a few weeks time!!
I was wondering where was best to find jobs/work out there. I have heard it is difficult to find work there, but obviously hoping it's not too hard.
Moving to the mountain village of Piana degli Albanese, 30 mins from Palermo. My Italian isn't that great either.
Anyone have an websites, papers when I get there, ideas??
Thankyou
See you in a few weeks!!

@ngela

Default Might be moving soon to Palermo

Hello to Everyone,

I am not a Brit, but I thought I try to ask for advice anyway (seeing that people are nice here . I am Hungarian who lives in the USA at the moment and maybe getting a teaching job in Palermo. I don't know how much a rent would be there for a small flat and how much life cost there. I was in June in Northern Italy, but that seems more expensive. Of course I don't know. Anyone any advice?

Thanks,
Emese

Hi, Dave Townsend here.......... Not long before the property in Cianciana is mine ( been saying that for about six months now) but looks like all the problems have been ironed out....... Unless porkies have been told..... But my lawyer a friend of the family will make sure all is well before the deed is done. Amazing place always remember the first time I drove through and wound the window down to ask the way. Turns out that most have family or have lived in Essex here in England............ Places like Harlow in Essex have the name of "little Sicily"..... so I'm told.......... Anyway Looking forward to living in Cianciana and hopefully not tooooooo cold in winter. So please get in touch... I'm 57 but not dead in the water and I dont want to end up "billy no mates" ............. I'm an electrician at the moment and have restored various properties here in the UK. I've worked as a sound recordist in film and television for bout 30 years and am quite cool with computers.... not looking for full time work but if anyone wants a hand, I'm your man.

My God .......... all these new faces and names and you never come and have a drink with us in the Happy Hour.
I have been here a bloody long time but it's only since discovering this site that I realised just how many brits are actually in Italy ........ not near me though.

I really do know how hard it can be - especially in little village rural areaas like mine - no expat comunity - and never a tin of beans to be found until the Pakistani shop opened up lasy year !

Do stick it out as life in italy can be very good but as in all walks of life there is bad and good and shitty red tape. Though I don't envy anyone trying to learn Italian through a Sicilian dialect ........ I thought the Veneto one was bad enough.

Get yourselves onto the Big it up for Italy thread and tell us what you do like - it will remind you why you wanted to come here ...... and then get into Happy Hour - have a drink and a chat and a laugh in English - it sometimes makes a world of difference to a lonely evening - and this is coming from somebody who has been here 18 years !

Hello Dave, we have just paid a depo on a town house in Cianciana, working on paying the balance as we speak
there is supposed to be quite an expat community out there, but we dont know any yet, except one. There are also one or two who post here, do a search for Cianciana.
I cant wait to get out there and see the place (bought blind off internet) crazy but true
do keep in touch

I think all us brits are fleeing the sinking ship........ Norwich where I live at the moment has turned into a eastern european Baltic state, so it's time to leave and the cool news is that the town hall offer Italian with the Sicilian touch lessons............. So no excuse not learning the language, when in Rome etc.......
People out there already, what temperatures can I expect over the winter months? warmer than here I hope, else its over to Tunisia.

Anybody know about their Electricity connection in Sicily?......... Been offered a 3Kw supply. Thats just about enough to boil my kettle in the morning........ as long as I turn the lights and fridge off.

Also whats the broadband connection speed like in Cianciana and how much does it cost?

Being my third post I should now be able to read messages.

True about the 3kw but after a while you get used to it. I can have 2 things on at the same time. eg- washer, ac, hairdryer, tumble dryer, or oven. I am near messina and we have adsl very fast. I know some areas of Sicily don't have adsl.

you can contact your electricity supplier and get it put up but you will end up paying more.

Mine is 3kw and if something big is turned on - wasshing machine - dishwasher, I have to turn it off before using my electric kettle. I've never had to turn the fridge off though.

3Kw it is then. Regarding internet, theres no telegraph poles in the area............ so must be USB wireless connections........ Anyone online in Cianciana?
Got my Codice Fiscale number today so hopefully proceed. The Consulate is just as quaint as Sicily itself, but got there in the end............ All I've been hearing are the words "non regular" banded about.........So lets hope Enel do a regular job in hooking up the supply.

selinuntina is on a distinguished road
Default Re: Help!Anybody in Sicily ?!

Ciao Tutti !!
Only just discovered this site which is a shame as we're actually leaving Sicily on 6th November . We are in Marinella Di Selinunte which is near Castelvetrano in the provincia d Trapani. I'm Michelle originally from Manchester and dh is Gus from Selinunte. We have 2 kids DD is 5 and just started scuola elementare last month and DS 4 who is still at Asilo.
We've been here 7 years and I've loved it here . We met in Liverpool, gus was working in a restaurant but had big dreams of coming back here. Unfortunately things haven't gone as planned, work wise, but also gus is so disillusioned with how things are not working here. he has tried so hard to get change but despite all the moaning and complaining when its actually comes down to doing anything about it, everyone disappears. So he applied for a job in Liverpool, got it and off we go back !
I notice a lot of people from cianciana, the guy across the road from me is from there, he's a chemist !
A dopo
