Default Getting Italian Residency

Hi. Can anyone provide a checklist of exactly what documentation I need to gather and what actions I need to take (and with who), in order to apply for & obtain Italian residency?

I am currently renting an apartment in Sicily & have been here for the most part of 2 years now with a number of trips back to the UK.

I have a UK passport & my great grandparents on my mothers side were born in Italy - one died there & one emigrated to the UK. I believe having Italian lineage might speed application process up?!

many thanks

Do you mean residency or citizenship?
For residence - you should already have it if you've been here two years - but you need your rentalcontract, proof of income, private health insurance - in Sicily you can buy into the Assicurazione Volontaria so go to the ASL and they will tell you how much it is - but it runs on solar year, so will expire on Decemebr 31. Alterntaively get private health insurance until the end of the year and buy in to VA next year. You need just over 6000 euros pa in income, and a registered rental contract.
For citizenship you will need to register on the online site and fill in the form, and the site tells you what you will need to provide. Cittadinanza | Ministero dell‘Interno

Hi modicasa. Thanks. I’m not entirely sure at the moment. Which will be the easier route; residency or citizenship - given that I had Italian great grandparents (hoping I can find the documentation required to prove this family lineage).

Regarding submitting a Rental contract: I have been in 3 apartments since I’ve been here and I've only had a proper rental contract for the place I've been renting for the past 11 months. My sister has a house here also which I was staying in for a couple of months when I first arrived (don't know if this makes any difference to the situation)

Regarding Health insurance: My private health insurance is currently in the UK. It’s a family plan so I will have to double check if it covers me out here, I cant remember. I had a separate private plan for the first 3 months I was out here but did not renew it.

I also read something about having to submit health/medical records when applying for residency/citizenship? Though I am fully fit and able, I was diagnosed with a chronic condition a couple of years ago (hence the trip to a warmer climate). Would this go against me even though (depending on BREXIT) I am covered with my EU medical card (spoke to my medical specialist about this)?

Also, I don’t have solid income records for the past 2 years as have been largely living off savings since I have been here apart from a little supplementary income. How might this affect my application? Could I just submit a bank statement showing my available funds?

many thanks

Your residency will applyfrom the day you ask for it, so if you have a contract now, thats fine. A bank statement will be ok, as long as it has the requisite sum of money on it. You must have health insurance. Residency takes no time at all. Citizenship takes at least 2 years. Anyway - you have been here two years, you must do your residency.

My thread Residency-A Story might help.

From responses and this forum, you may find what is requested in your region is different from my experiences...and whatever the actual 'legal' requirements you will get nowhere unless you provide what is requested, legal or otherwise. We are in a pretty laid back area, we didn't show bank statements for example, just needed to sign a document saying we had enough money to live here. Also, health cover may vary from region to region.

Get it started, be prepared for several visits. Some help with translation will be a great help if your Italian is limited.

Doesn't that depend on how long he's spent back in the UK each year? He does say he's made several trips back.

He says he been more for the most part of 2 years - so I assumed he was here over 50% of the time - ie more than 183 days a year. or more than 90 days in a single trip.

Thanks arjacey. I'll check out your thread. When you say "visit", where will I have to visit exactly to process the application? I'm living in Agrigento.

Edit; just read, think I do all this through my local Commune..

Good point. I've not been back that much though. Longest trip was for 3 weeks when I passed through the UK to the States and then back to UK

Ps, just thinking; do I definitely need private health insurance if I have an EU Medical Card. My specialist said the card would cover me for pretty much everything in Italy. The UK government recompenses the Italian government directly for all treatment apparently

As Giordieborn said - from your medical specialist's (are we talking Italian or British here, by the way?) description it must be an EHIC card. The EHIC card covers you for Emergency treatment only. The Comune will (which in Italy translates into should, and probably will) insist on proper comprehensive medical insurance. I can't help with sources I'm afraid, as there was no such requirement when I got my residency.
