Re: English tv in Italy
Hi,we had a slingbox for a couple of years, installed in our sons spare room.He had it linked to his Sky anyroom, otherwise we would be controlling his main tv from here.Every now and then it would crash and we had to text him to reset it.Not a very convenient set up really and after 2 years it burnt out anyway.Cheers,Brian.

I find most BBC programmes of interest to me- some art/culture docs, films- available on torrents. In UK couple weeks ago and from what I saw most of output is subpar if not outright trash these days- reality shows, cooking shows, soaps, game shows...
Iplayer is blocked outside UK as mentioned.
I tried tvcatchup and got 'reception'. Breakfast tv: euuggh!

If your internet and device is okay, then TV via something like iplayer or tvcatchup should be fine. If not then try streaming what you want to watch to a USB stick and watch it when you want. A great bit of software mentioned here before is get_iplayer if you visit the UK, use it to download loads of TV. Not tried it from Italy with a VPN, but suspect it won't work.

It is possible to receive some of the main UK channels (BBC1,2,3,4, ITV1, Channel4). I am wary of 'broadcasting' this too widely in case the method is closed off. Anyone interested can PM me.
I wish the broadcasters would hurry up and provide a subscription-based internet service.

Look at TVMucho. New kid on the block, claims to be legal, no VPN required (which we found BBC was blocking anyway), reasonable rates.
If you are interested, PM me as it mightbe mutually beneficial. I haven't looked at the 'invite a friend' deals yet but it could be good.
Usual provisos on continuity of service....

Lots out there on the web about it, but nothing untoward, looks as you say like a new starter. If Beeb blocks your vpn service get in touch with your provider as they most likely have a solution. However this is a cat and mouse game so it will happen often. Smaller vpn companies are getting away with it for now, but they may hit them anytime. Some vpn companies will give you a personal IP address at a cost.

Express VPN have, sort of, given up, just say it’s a problem that might be resolved by reconnecting, switching on and off, reconnecting wi-if, disabling Location Services and so on, but nothing seems to work so I have given up as well.
VPN Express works well but bandwidth needs to be purchased. Sometimes need to restart app or reconnect VPN but, so far, quite reliable.

I have to admit I really don't understand wanting British TV over here.
There are Italian versions of most British programmes and to be honest I found it has helped me learning the language a lot. I never really watched corrie or eastenders though in the first place.
British TV has gone downhill anyway. There are a couple of nice things maybe but not enough to really get me going down a whole VPN route or anything.
Maybe I just don't love TV enough but I certainly didnt come to Italy to watch British TV..... I can do that in Britain lol

I agree, but we had almost stopped watching TV before we bought here 8 years back. Still there is the occasional sports radio program I might want to listen to and the beeb block a lot. In those small number of occasions I use the VPN which cost circa £50 for 2 years...

VPns are a useful security feature. ISPs in the US have started selling clients browsing and download data and I don't suppose the ones in Italy are far behind. If you use a VPN the ISP cannot record what you are doing online.

As a security feature I don't really see the point, if someone can make money out of me browsing expat forums and the occasional cooking website then best of british to them I guess...
