Hi,we have just drove back to calabria from uk and gave our brazilian born neighbour a load of goodies including parsnips, not realising they were her favorite veg from brazil. They call them yellow carrots over there. For some reason they cannot be bought here. Can they be grown here or does a med climate make this impossible, cheers,Brian.

They grow carrots here, so no reason you can't grow parsnips. Problem we've found is with carrots (same requirement as parsnip) our soil is far too heavy, although we did find a short fat variety of carrot that produced a superb crop. Perhaps it would be the same for parsnips, but we would then need to find the time and the space!

Perhaps in the beginning, but Aldi always seem to be full of people these days.

You can cook Italian sausage with just about any method, including in a pressure cooker. Cook it alone or pressure cook it with other ingredients, according to the recipe you're following.

Yes, you can use Italian sausage in all English recipes normally requiring British sausages: toad in the hole comes out fine.
The salamella is something I always used to cook on the griddle, but I've found that simmering for an hour makes it lighter and good to eat all the same.

It's Lidl French week! We're going to load up with Camembert etc:!

Successful trip! Loaded up with 6 bottles of Bordeaux (€2.99) and 6-7 cheeses, cheaper than Italian ones.

We were in Innsbruck over the weekend and got a bid giddy when we saw parsnips on the market, so bought a big bag full, half of which we will probably have to freeze. We also got some yellow carrots (apparently the Dutch selectively bred carrots to be orange, before they used to be available in a variety of different shades) which are definitely not parsnips in this case.

Hi,we got invited way up in the mountains Sunday for lunch.8 Brits and 20 odd locals.Everything was homegrown and produced.Bresola, pork and fennel sausage, melanzane lasagne, stuffed pepper, hot mixed pepper and spuds, barbequed beef and freshly picked porcini mushrooms barbequed with a little salt.On top of all this homemade wine, grappa and a nut and coffee liquor.Perhaps this should be on the "do you feel welcome in Italy thread" but we felt honoured and chuffed to be up there with Sila Grande behind us and a large expanse of the Med in front.Cheers,Brian.

Yes, we should give credit where it's due! I've had similar hospitality in Emilia, Tuscany and Sicily.

I am surprised that you cannot find parsnips here. A roasted parsnip is one of my favourite vegetables. The seeds are available on the internet but they are difficult to grow in our clay soil.

There's not a lot of cultivation in Trentino, it's mainly berries, soft fruit & vineyards and what is left over is largely left for corn & potatoes. That said, I still find it astonishing that parsnips aren't available in the shops.

I'm with you on roasted parsnips, they're glorious.

As for Brian's comment, we've been invited on several outings, which are usually a lot of fun and quite an experience. I do love how an Italian "picnic" involves transporting the entire contents of your house to a field!
