Carte d'Identit Elettroniche
on the municipio web site for Roma X there is the following:-
Roma Capitale n. GC/331697/2016, dal 15 maggio 2017 saranno rilasciate esclusivamente le Carte d'Identit Elettroniche
has anyone got one of these? how do they work?
i use my (paper) Carte d'Identit for all kinds of things but mainly for ID when boarding aircraft, checking in to hotels etc. will it still work for that?

I think most of us will still have paper ones. Can't see our comune coping with electronics.

Our Comune has just started (from 1st April, if I remember right). It just happens that our cards needed renewal in late March, so we'll be among the last of the paper ones here. From what I know, the new ones will have exactly the same value in all contexts to the paper ones, plus - I believe - will operate as a "Carta Nazionale dei Servizi" as an alternative to your SSN card. There is no choice here, from 1 April only electronic ones will be issued.
Other significant differences appear to be:
The electronic version is not produced by the comune, so you need to allow at least 14 days for renewal - though probably even more would be wise
The electronic version costs €22 as opposed to the paper ones that were €4 something. I would imagine the cost being the same in all Comuni.

We've had them in Verona for several years now. They only issue paper ones in an emergency now i.e. if you've need to vote and you've lost your I.D. At they moment, they do not operate as a carta nationale di servizio -they've only just started loading prescriptions on them for a small number of people in verona. But yes, it works the same as old ones for check in and hotels etc. One downside is that you have to book an appointment several months in advance or sit and wait all day. Not convenient if you need one for a newborn. The comune advises booking an appointment before the baby is born. Someone told me that the charge is €22 + €5 if you are replacing a lost card.
After Brexit, we will not be able to use ID cards for trips to the UK.

It's the same size as you credit card/DL. Another bit of plastic for your wallet.

And it will supposedly, eventually, some day be an all in combined ID, codice fiscale and health card.
I wasn't clear when I said that prescriptions will be loaded on to them. At the moment they are experimenting with the health card. They will be loaded on to ID when the two cards are combined.

Re: Carte d'Identit Elettroniche
I got one earlier this year because my paper one had been mashed up due to being too big to fit in my wallet (also I spilled coffee on it!). Much more inconvenient, if also more expensive. I don't think the additional features have been activated as yet in Trentino.
The card did come from Rome by courrier, so there was a 10-day window between the original appointment for the card and the new one arriving. I was told I had to hand over my old paper card at the appointment but when I pointed out that would leave me without a card until the new one arrived and what would I show if stopped by the police, they let me keep the old one anyway.
The appointment was a lot easier for me than 37100's experience - I was able to book an appointment within a couple of days although, bizarrely, not at my local circoscrizione. Found that strange given that the card is coming from Rome.

That explains the wait, I wonder why we're not allowed to produce the cards ourselves, maybe something to do with autonomy.
