I currently live in the centre of Milan, but my friend lives in a place called Lecco which is on Lake Como and is relatively cheap to live compared to a few places, and its only 40-50 mins from Milan.

You maybe better trying to rent privately wherever you start off, as some agencies will want large upfront fees as well as longer term contracts and some want more than just a codice fiscale, so just be careful.
