Have a look at this blog of an American woman living in Cortona with her dog. It reads like there is a friendly expat community in the area. travel-blog

We have a house just across the valley from Cortona and we felt the earthquake in August but that was all. My OH didn't even wake up. Apparently there was just lights swinging during the latest according to our neighbours. Trasimeno area quite a way from the epicentre.

The entire country is at risk of eathquake, it's just something you have to accept if you want to live here. Just because a particular area is down as low risk does not mean it will be safe forever! Sorry I know nothing about the area in question, but I'm sure, like everywhere else we have been in Italy, it will be lovely and a very safe place to live compared to other countries we know.

The main danger in Italy is from motorists and not earthquakes.
Cortona is a good place for cactus lovers. There is an impressive cactus supermarket nearby. Well worth a visit. A nice part of Tuscany.

Yes, our insurance does not include cover for earthquake anywhere in Italy but we love our little corner of Umbria, and with Cortona and Montepulciano equidistant from us what's not to like. Also local Trasimeno wine for €1.35 a litre and fabulous sunsets - even better

Sounds interesting. Where is the cactus supermarket? I'm keen to get some next time we're there and it sounds as though it will be in our vicinity

Its Giromagi at Terontola near the motorway junction for Perugia and Siena.

Hi,we stayed there a couple of weeks driving home from uk.We found it a beautiful walled medieval town. Its only 6 miles from the motorway and at a fairly low altitude,so would of thought earthquake risk is reduced although I am no sysmic scientist, cheers,Brian.

The Casa di Vasari is well worth a look if you are in Arezzo. Beautiful little house and gardens with paintings on the walls.
