Any driver insurance?
 

Our car is insured for use in Italy through Stuart Collins, no probs there but we are thinking of getting a cheap runaround for everyday use.
My brother in law has a fiat punto down the farm that he has just renovated (it was given to him free as it was a non runner) and he has said we can have it.
The problem is insurance. He swears that - since the car is registered to him - we don't need our own insurance, he says his insurance covers anyone to drive his cars. I don't believe that such a policy is possible, and we would need to insure the car before we can legally drive it. Anyone heard of such a policy in Italy?

if its his car, then he insures it. Assuming you're under 26 then its highly probable you will enter on your brother in laws insurance.

I thought all Italian car insurance was "any driver".

Here in the Phils, the car is insured not the driver as in UK. Anyone can drive it 1. If they have a licence and 2. Have the owners permission. quite common in many countries.

Yep, it's car insurance in Italy, not driver insurance...

that being said you need to be in the policy. There are exceptions for new qualified, young or old drivers, - so it depends how you brother inlaw has insured the car. If he says its ok, its ok.
There is also a tweak in the law last year i think, which says that if the car is not yours you must have the written permission of the owner in the car at all times, along with the log book should the pilice stop you. you will also need the insurance certificate or a digital version of same on you if they flag you down.

Similar here. By law in the car must be a copy of the CR and OR. That's the registration certificate and the up to date receipt for tax etc. Here, the annual renewal fee includes 3rd party insurance. you don't need the owners written permission but if the police have any doubts they'll contact the owner to confirm they know you are driving the car. Because of the "complexity" of changing the owners name (ours took 4 MONTHS) it is quite usual for the registration to still be in the original owners name and folks change the owner when they retax it. (That's if they bother to retax! - This IS the Philippines!)
