Halfbrick (Fruit Ninja, Jetpack Joyride) are based in Brisbane and have been getting a lot of exposure lately, I believe there are a few game developers in and around the place.

I regularly see iOS dev jobs on SEEK, this is probably the best place to check out which areas are popular:

gamedevmap.com but don't know how updated it is for Oz...Brisbane/Melbourne and a couple other places have a small IGDA scene going, so might check those chapters out.

Read up on the guttering to THQ and you'll find a few indie start ups that came from the ashes.

There's also a Oz Unity group going around twitter that might be worth looking up.

Now is free so I guess more company will like to do that.

Unity has always been free...they just charged a license to build iOS and Android builds, but you can get the basic license for free now till 8th April.

Unity also have had a bunch of free introduction online classes, might still have another couple coming up. Probably will have a bunch of presentations coming up now that GDC is over with.
