Thinking of relocating....

Hello,
My husband and I are looking to relocate from Phoenix, Arizona in the US. I spent a couple
of years in Australia not too long ago and loved it! We are thinking of possible
relocation to Australia. I didn't find a FAQ for this group, so I hope that I'm not asking
TERRIBLY obvious questions.
Firstly, regarding actually attaining a visa, my husband is a "senior software specialist"
and has been working in the computer field for going on seventeen years. Unfortunately, he
does not actually have a degree (he's been so busy working in the field I don't think he's
had time!). How much impact would this have on his ability to get a skilled visa?
I don't believe I have enough qualifications to get a skilled visa myself. I work as a
freelance editor/proofreader/newsletter publisher/lots of other odd little bits of work.
Would I automatically be eligible for residency if my husband gets a visa? Would I be able
to work if I were to be eligible?
On the financial side of things, I know salaries are generally lower in Australia than
they are in the United States. Taxes are also higher. I have not been able, though, to
find anything giving comparative costs of living. When I was in Australia, I was sharing a
house with two other people, so I don't have a very good feel for that myself. I know it
will vary depending on where you are, but can anyone give me a general idea on that?
Finally, location. I'm sure there are more jobs available in Sydney than anywhere else
just because it's a bigger city. I don't like cities though and two of my best friends
have just moved to Tasmania (Scottsdale, which is in the Launceston area, I believe). Does
anyone have any idea what the employment situation is in Tasmania? Not necessarily just in
Launceston and surrounds; Hobart isn't too far to drive.
Thank you all for your help!

G'day, You could go to http://www.immi.gov.au for information on skilled visa's or any
other that may apply and enable you and husband in moving to Oz.
As for the job category -- I'm afraid I'll not be much help in this. I only know of one
job search engine which is at http://www.monster.com.au -- can look for all sorts of
jobs that are available nationwide (within Australia, of course). Can see if there's any
in Tasmania.
Best as I could.
