Hi all,

I have non-IT degree and I am doing part time MBA in IT from Mumbai University currently. Duration is 3 years part time and has 6 semesters. Out of 32 papers in all semesters, 11 papers are of IT and others are of management.In the final year, there is no IT paper. I want to ask that in the ACS assessment, will I be qualified in group A which requires 4 years work experience or in group B which requires 6 years of work experience. Please reply to this query. Thanks in advance.

Hi Kaushik,

I feel I was largely in a similar position as you when I applied to the ACS.

I am Bachelor of Engineering in Chemical Engineering, worked for almost 10 years in this profession. In 2000 I decided on a carreer change and I started to work for a major IT service provider. In 2002 I felt I should try to get formal qualifications and I undertook an IT Science study at bachelor level during evening hours (part time). I did complete all subjects, but did not finalize the graduation report (so no diploma, but a full marks list).

I used BOTH educations to demonstrate to ACS that I am educated at bachelor level, and that my studies contained enough IT content to meet their IT as major requirement. My reference letters from my (ex)employers provided in great detail my duties and responsibilities as well as examples of completed projects. In my cover letter I argued that I did a formal IT studies after I already completed a degree and even tho I did not complete that studies the content was ALL ICT. I argued that my qualifications were at least satisfying group B (non-ICT degree with minor in ICT), but as my marks list demonstrated an equivalent of 103 credits, with 60 credits being a full academic year) I personally felt I should qualify as applicant group A.

I was accepted by the ACS as applicant in Group A.

How the ACS will consider your case depends on the information you provide and how you present it. Make sure you show what percentage of your studies is ICT related. Read paragraph 2.2.5 of the PIM guidelines carefully and see if you can provide the evidence to prove the amount of ICT content in your masters (as you do this with an underpinned non-ict degree).
