Default Onshore application for International student

Dear all,

I am an internation student from China and i just finished my master degree
in IS here in Australia. At this time, I am preparing to apply for the PR.
Few questions that i would like to have your advices. I already submitted
my ACS assessment few days ago, and I assumed that i have no problems for
that:

1) Should I do the police check and medical check now. As i know, these doc.
need to be front-loaded with the application.

2) If Yes for Q1, then how long is the medical and police check are valid.
I heard from others in the newsgroup that it lasts for one year, is that
true? If it is, i guess i better do it now.

3) I lived in Hawaii for 5 years and I need to obtain the Police check there
as well. I need to do finger prints for that. Does anyone know where I can
get it done in Melbourne?

4) The booklet is not very clear. What sorts of documents need to be
original when i send to the DIMA. The booklet says that all documents should
be certified copies, but they may request original. I heard from others
here the assessment form from ACS needs to be original, what else?

That's all i have at this time, thank you very much for your help.

1) Yes you should do your medicals and AFP clearance now. You can start your Chinese one as well although not required until later in the processing. And does not have to be front end loaded.

2) If the medical is all clear with no health undertaking required then it is valid for 12 months. The AFP clearance is also valid for 12 months.

3) Not sure about the local clearance for that island
4) Original needs to be submitted of skills assessment, all police clearances and Australain quals.

Steven,

The original Australian qualifications need to be submitted as well? A certified copy of one's Aussie degree scroll and transcripts won't do?

Hi Peter

When the 880 visa class started 18 months ago, whenever we sent in certified copies of transcripts and completion letters relating to the Australian qualification we continually were asked to submit the original. And they would not give them back. So for last 15 months we have done this.

Their reasoning was a bit confusing, but we have done this ever since because of those experiences at the start.

Hi Steven,

Thanks for the explanation. I guess there's nothing wrong with submitting original transcripts, as transcripts are documents that can be re-produced by the universities on demand.

I asked my question more for the degree certificate itself rather than the transcripts. Degree certificates (or scrolls or whatever you call those pieces of paper that usually cost you several years of your life to obtain!) are usually a one-off document - most universities I know do not re-produce lost, stolen or destroyed certificates once they have been presented to the graduate. I would be surprised if DIMIA were to not return original degree certificates. I know NZIS explicitly asks for original degree certificates from applicants from certain countries, but they (NZIS) also provide for the return of these documents to their owners later on.

Regards,
Peter

Hi Peter, Steven,

We don't submit the originals of the offshore education documentation and
have only been asked to submit this for review once in about 50 onshore
student cases. With respect to the onshore education documentation, we
haven't been asked for originals at all. This could relate to the
respective case mix of mine and Steven's practices. Not sure who are
studying in Perth :-)

Cheers

George,

Hmm..... Maybe I should go ask some of my colleagues who graduated from WA universities for their original certificates, just to make sure they are indeed skilled labour Of course, I'll return the certificates to them after I'm done looking at them...

Hi Peter/George

We do not submit originals of the actual award certificates. Just the transcript of the units and completion letter. Also only for the Australian qualification.

I prefaced the comment by saying that was as a result of Adelaide's actions when the 880 started. Also given they now ask for transcripts of some overseas qualifications to be sent direct from the University to Adelaide (ie Chinese and a few others) I did not think they would relax this requirement.

They may well of but as it is not a great hinderence to get a 2nd transcript, and the completion letter is only for DIMIA purposes anyhow, we have not changed our process .. yet.

Regards and merry xmas to you both.

It's such great helps from you people out there. It does clarify many of my
questions regarding to the application. Here are few more questions that i
would love to have your opinions:

1) For onshore application of International student w/ AU degree, how long
is the application time? Can it be done within 6 months?

2) There are 2 types of police clearance for the United States. Fingerprint
check and name check. Which one is actually required by the DIMA? If the
fingerprint is the case, does the police station provide the service to take
fingerprint in Australia

3) I do not take the IELTS. I got my undergraduate degree from the US and
my master in Australia. Am I qualified for the 20 points for English?

Thank you very much,

ibm

Hi,

With what I have read in posts in this, it generally takes less than six
months for onshore student applicants to get PR.

Degree followed in Eglish medium, being physically in an English speaking
country awards you 20 points..I was told so by a friend.

regards
Ranga
