Graduate Engineer and Nurse - jobs in Oz, where to start?
Hi there,
Me and my girlfriend are currently in Whistler, Canada on a Ski season and are now looking to move over to OZ to live and work permanently. My girlfriend studied Nursing at university (Bachelor of Adult Nursing) and also did a post graduate Bsc Hepatology and has worked on a specialised liver ward for one year and I studied Civil Engineering (1st class MEng) but have had no full time work experience (aside from summer work placements). I’m looking to ideally go into Mining as both the work and the money is appealing, or alternatively into Structural Engineering Design, and my girlfriend wants to stay in nursing.
We are looking to move at the beginning of next year, but don’t really know where to start. Do we start looking for jobs first, trying to secure those before we apply for visas, or do we do it the other way around? Where is the best place to search for these jobs, or is there a career advisor that we can contact? My girlfriend has been told that hospitals sometimes sponsor Nurses to come over to oz and pay for a lot of things (e.g. flights for her + partner).
Any advice you can give us to get us started would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks a lot!
Stewart

You can do either, look for jobs and then get visa or the other way around. It is a personal choice, it is not that easy for the average person to find a job first, but does depend on occupation and is usually ok for nurses and possibly engineers (although I believe experienced ones).
Are you a defacto couple, i.e. living together for >12 months? If so only one of you needs qualify for the visa and the other can be added as secondary applicant. For a temporary visa it doesn't need the 12 months, 6 is usually ok.
If you wanted to move quickly and are not sure if you want a permanent move then those might be good reasons to go for the temporary employer sponsored visa (most employers tend to offer temporary employer sponsorship rather than permanent).
But I wouldn't be choosing this option for cheap flights, it seems a little short termist. There are disadvantages with this visa; being tied to an employer you do not like, 28 days notice to leave the country and occasionally people have reported that being the secondary applicant on the 457 has made it more difficult to secure employment. If the relationship breaks down the secondary applicant on the 457 will have to find their own visa PDQ as well.
I am afraid I do not know where you start to look for nursing jobs but I am sure somebody will.

Re: Graduate Engineer and Nurse - jobs in Oz, where to start?
guys if you're seeking engineering check out the grad jobs directories:
http://www.graduateopportunities.com...careers_search
http://www.gradconnection.com.au/
http://www.unigrad.com.au/jobs/advanced-search.aspx
you've missed the major recruiting round which starts in Feb each year but there will still be some companies recruiting all year around.
...for nursing - depends on which state you want to live in, these links are for qld:
http://www.health.qld.gov.au/jobs/default.asp
http://www.uchealth.com.au/careers/i...d=93&Itemid=65
http://www.ramsayjobs.com.au/
these links might also have some advice for international nurses - check it out - good luck!
