Friend in need: police check
We have a friend who is desperate to start a new life with his family in Australia. He has started the emigration process but is wary that his police check will exclude him from entry. He has a couple of assault charges and one charge of posession of drugs; silly man. Does anyone know of anyone who has managed to receive a visa with this type of infringement

Thanks for the advice; charges were a couple of years back or more and he was fined for both.

Depends on an awful lot of factors including how long ago the convictions were, how serious they were - minor assault? GBH? Many people with offences like this have got visas but each case is dealt with individually. Your friend would be best advised to speak to a registered agent.

If you aren't satisfied with the agent stop using him. Have a look through the forum and you will find several recommended for cases like this. When getting a new agent ask them how many cases they have dealt with involving criminal convictions and what their success rate is like. No-one on here is going to be able to tell you exactly what view DIAC will take of the offences, the best advice you'll get is that if they were minor, he was only fined for them, and has good character witnesses and/or mitigating circumstances he should be OK, but that purely a laypersons view based on previous cases on here.
