US passport holders
I am a US citizen and I want to apply for Austrailian residency. If I get Australian
residency, do I have to take Austrailian citizenship? Basically, I don't want to
lose US citizenship. Can I come and go out of Austrailia without any problem with
just permanent resident status.
Regards,
K.H.

Khalid,
No you do not have to take Australian Citizenship. Yes you can come and go out of
Australia if you have permanent resident status. But you do have to fulfill the
residency and returning resident requirements to keep everything current.
On another note, you could get Australian Citizenship after living in Australia for
two years and also keep American Citizenship. Yes, dual citizenship is now allowed
by US. And it goes without saying that you can keep both Australian and US
passports.
Where in Australia are you thinking of moving? Do you live in MA? I am in Boston
suburbs. Drop me an email.

You won't lose your US citizenship if you become an Australian citizen. You can
have both.
Check out the following website for information on the US policies on dual
citizenship. http://www.richw.org/dualcit/
Australia has no restrictions on Australians holding dual citizenship or on the
retention of original citizenships by newly naturalized Australians.

Yes, but you can't stay out of Australia indefinitely with permanent resident status.
You'd eventually lose that status if you stay abroad too long.
If you become an Australian citizen, you'd gain the ability to stay abroad for as
long as you wish. Plus you'd gain the responsibility to vote, to hold an Australian
passport, etc.
