Im very new to this site and was hoping someone can give me some good advise I'm currently staying with my sister (after a bad marriage break up) in sydney on a holiday visa, I would love to stay here and looking into my visa options, I have been a builder (property developer in the uk and project manager for over 20 years) but I did not do any recognised qualification so although I have the experience - I'm 15 points away from being able to apply - do you know is it possible to a course whilst I'm staying here I've looked into a masters builders association in project managing - would I with my references be able to use this once when I'm applying for the visa 189 ?? thanking you in advance for any guidance

Hi Tony,

To apply for a 189 visa you would need to pass the skills assessment as a builder. Project builder is assessed by Vetassess - General Occupations (Skills Assesssment for Migration) - VETASSESS

Experience can be substituted for qualifications with the assessment, and once assessed, relevant experience can be used for points.

One way of getting extra points is to take IELTS, which can get you up to 20 extra points.

You need to have a valid skills assessment to be able to lodge an EOI. Once lodged, you need to wait for an invite to apply for a visa. Check out Australian Government Department of Immigration and Border Protection and Skill Select.

IELTS is an English test - you can gain 20 points for superior English or 10 points for proficient English depending on your score. Superior you need all 8's or better, Proficient is all 7's or better. There are alternative English tests available also, but IELTS is still the most common I think.
