Re: Aged mother visiting Aus for 6 months, insurance and visa queries
The Medicare card thing was puzzling me so I looked it up - your mum probably has a yellow Medicare card, which is given to those from reciprocal health agreement countries. All the restrictions of the reciprocal health agreement apply.
As a UK citizen, your mum is entitled to medically essential treatment for injuries or ill-health that occur while she's in Oz, and which require treatment before she returns home. Anything that is deemed non-urgent/not essential won't be covered. Some additional services not covered under the reciprocal agreements are home and extended care nursing, ambulance, podiatry, hearing and eye services. Probably worth putting all that into the mix when making a decision on travel insurance

I used to be an Insurance Broker and also had an aged mother. That premium seems cheap, surprised that she could get it for such a long visit. Certainly check on the extent of the cover specifically pre existing conditions.
I can think of many reasons why an Insurer would not want to cover just the flight and many why she needs cover in Australia.

Thankyou quoll, Pollyanna, Boiler and spouse of scouse!!
She has booked and paid!! 3 month visa, can be extended once here, possibly; 1170 pounds insurance, 87 days. They have all her current and past medical history. After all that was done, travel agent then said now all she needs is Fit to fly documents... Surely the whole thing should have been reliant on her being fit!!??
Anyway, she can check that out tomorrow...
Really looking forward to it!!!
Thanks all again x

No she's just bought insurance, she didn't have a medical for that insurance. The airline would be well within their rights to refuse to let her on the flight given her age and the length of flight. Bit like a heavily pregnant woman needing a Fit to Fly document.
