ACS clarification for skilled visa - Cisco Voice
Hello all and greetings from up above (the UK).
Well this is probably going to sound very familiar and I'm sorry for that. It seems there's a wash of information available on here, the web and other sources and I'm trying to get some simple answers without trying to get too in-depth.
My partner and I are looking at moving to Australia permanently and looking at suitable visa types and the one which seems to be the most applicable and suitable is the ACS skilled visa with 263111 - Computer Network and Systems Engineer as the role. However I am unsure where my qualifications and experience puts me with applying for this.
I work with IP Telephony, this seems to be a bit of a specialist role which doesn’t translate like for like down under however roles are available.
Here is such a role Unified Communication Engineer
Now this role is a bit of an entry position but it gives you an idea of the position being available but there is no easily identifiable role for the visa which would allow me to get such a position, let along confirm I can obtain a visa.
I’ve noticed the odd post about the similar experience, training / certification and roles (one was oddly pretty much a mirror of my qualifications and experience but no conclusion was on the thread and it’s now closed) here
I would welcome any help in identifying a way to obtain the correct visa, based on anyone’s experiences. Also I have sent some details to a migration agent in the meantime, so if I find anything out I will keep you updated.
Kind regards,
Shane Blackwell

Re: ACS clarification for skilled visa - Cisco Voice
Hi.
The first step in the visa process is determining initially which visa you may wish to apply for and working out if you are eligible!
Is your occupation on the SOL or CSOL? - you have already seen that it is on the SOL so that's a good start.
You then need to work out if you can get enough points to apply for a skilled visa independently or if you need a work or state sponsor to 'top up' your points.
The points you get will depend on age, english, work experience and qualification.
ACS will assess your qualification (you don't mention if you have one - do you? when did you get it?) and work experience and determine how many points they are worth.
Have a look at ANSZCO to see if your occupation is a close match to the 263111 code and have a read of how points are awarded for work experience and qualifications on Australian Government Department of Immigration and Border Protection and ACS.
If you think you fit the bill then you'll need to get your skills assessed by ACS before you submit an EOI for a visa.
Have a good read and then ask specific questions if you get stuck.
Best of luck.

Re: ACS clarification for skilled visa - Cisco Voice
Hello goldchoccycoin,
Thank you for getting back to me.
I have a HNC in Computing, which I got around 2001 / 2002 (I'd have to look it up). Other than that I've got a few certifications in IT, those being ITIL and Senior Servicedesk Analyst (SDA). I did have a CCNA Voice but that expired last year, so I need to redo that and its a new track now as Cisco has ended the Voice track and changed it to Collaboration for my field. Only in Ciscos way they cancel the previous track with no means to study the new one as theres still no training available to purchase, only attend training courses.
How do you work out how many points I would have?
Kind regards,
Shane Blackwell

Hi Shane,
I'm not sure if an HNC is suitable for 263111 or not (sorry, not my area)? I do know that for some occupations that work experience can be used in lieu of qualifications but it does effect how many years you can claim for work experience.
You can see how points are awarded specific to your circumstance on the 'Points Test' tab at Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189)
I recommend thoroughly reading that page and associated pages and also Migration Skills Assessment | Australian Computer Society
Best of luck.

I think k the first two things you need to focus upon are the points test and skills assessment. You can tot up your points pretty quickly using the link someone else provided. Skills assessment might be trickier.
Many of the IT occupations will require a degree for skills assessment, I expect this one will too, but sometimes years of work experience can substitute for that. I don't think certifications will change anything, they might be handy down the track for job hunting, but I don't think will help with the visa process.
So I guess you need to get stuck into ACS website and see if you can pass a skills assessment based on work experience. I could not open the previous post you linked to, but if it didn't have a conclusive answer then it is possibly because it was getting a bit too technical for a free forum. We are alll from different occupations and a lot of what you wrote has gone clean over my head amyway. If you need to have a more technical conversation, then I think you probably need to engage a migration agent.

ACS ANZSCO Code Descriptions - https://www.acs.org.au/__data/assets...tions-2015.pdf
ACS Summary criteria - https://www.acs.org.au/__data/assets...teria-2014.pdf
ACS Skills Assessment Guidelines - https://www.acs.org.au/__data/assets...Applicants.pdf (vendor certificates are on page 10)
I've had a HNC in a different area assessed as equivalent to AQF Diploma, and I think Vendor certificates are assessed at the same level (don't take my word though - you can email ACS and they are very helpful by all accounts)
ACS assessments require a mix of qualification and experience - or RPL and experience only. Experience used to be assessed as skilled does not count for points so in calculating how many points you have you should deduct 5 or 6 years from total experience. Of course, that experience needs to be in your occupation, or closely related, to gain points. Check your roles and responsibilities match the ANZSCO code
