about citizenship????
Hi everyone, we moved to australia in nov 05 and became citizens in jan 2009 we have now moved back to the uk due to family problems and was wondering that if decided to stay here in uk for quite sometime(poss 5 years) would our citizenship still be valid or would we have to come back to oz within 5 years to keep it open. Can anyone give us a little info on this please.
Thankyou

Re: about citizenship????
so just to clarify, we DON"T have to go back into australia to keep our citizenship open, we have this forever? When we eventually do go back to oz all we need to enter oz is our ozzy passports(is this correct?) but when we left australia we left on our british passports cause we couldn't afford to get our ozzy ones at the time. So can we apply for our australian passports while living in the uk?
We have heard quite a few rumuors about this subject and having to go back within 5 yrs to oz, we just atarted worrying.
Thanks for your help and the info u have given us.

Yes. If you have Australian citizenship (and have your citizenship certificate to prove it, it's for life. And yes, you can apply for your Australian passports in the UK.

Re: about citizenship????
thanks for that u have made my day. Just one more question. While we were in australia we had a son in jan 2008 and became citizens in jan 2009, obviously he will automatically be an australian citizen i presume, he also only holds a british passport, do we have to go down a different route to obtain an australian passport for him or is it the same process as us.
Cheers.

In order to prove it, he needs a certificate of evidence of Australian citizenship. Use form 119 on the DIAC website. It can be lodged at the Australian High Commission. After that, get an Australian passport.
Don't listen to anyone who tells you a certificate is not needed. If he loses his passport and doesn't have a citizenship certificate, he may find it impossible to prove his status in future - or at least not without a huge delay and hassle.
If you got your permanent status after your son was born, then he's not an Australian citizen.
