489 Family Sponsored?
Hi all,
First post on here. My first impressions are EVERYONE IS SO HELPFUL AND HAPPY TO SHARE THEIR JOURNEY!! There is so much info, its like a go-to library!
I am a new user and very new to the migration process. I am looking for a bit guidance pls.
So, myself with wife and 2 kids are looking to migrate to Australia, hopefully to Perth. My sister lives there too (UK expat with citizenship now). I have had my skills assessed with positive outcome as Plumber. If I were to apply for 189 visa, I have 45 points at present (without IELTS test). I know I need to score very high to get 20 IELTS points to give me 65 visa points. Someone recently has called out that I may be able to apply for 489 under family sponsor with my sister providing 10 points as sponsor which will take me to 55 visa points, then I need to score the equivalent of 10 or more IELTS points to get either 65 or 75 visa points.
My question is, does plumber occupation need to be on the WA migration list as well for 489 family sponsor visa? I see the occupation is on the main DIBP STSOL/MLTSST list but not sure whether it needs to be on the WA list as well. I have a few questions:
Can someone help clarify this?
What happens if Plumber is on another State list? Can my sister still be a sponsor if she is WA based?
I would like to migrate to Perth preferably. I understand 189 is PR visa though 489 is 4 years before there is another stage. I feel it is going to be difficult to achieve the 20 IELTS points (going by reading how many times people have attempted in the past. I am considering with Pearson at the moment). The reason I am steering towards 489 visa is lack of points and availability of family sponsor. My sister is happy to sponsor so that helps with extra 10 points. Obviously, I will give Pearson my best shot, but given it has taken people SO MANY attempts, time and costs will need to be added to the whole pre-visa process.
If anyone can share what options I have on the 489 visa (or other), it would be very much appreciated. I hope to be sharing a happy story on here one day too

Hi there and welcome to the forum
I've moved your post to it's own thread as your questions could be lost in the thread you posted in.
Not 100% but I think your sister should be okay to sponsor you on 489 which will reduce the score you need in the English test - and if you do better than expected, you can still submit an EOI for 189.
I took IELTS and achieved all 9's on second attempt after missing out with a 7.5 for listening first time round, so it is possible. Not a result to take for granted though, and there are plenty of practice material online.
What is the breakdown for your current points? If you can outline those you have included it would help see if you have missed anything.

Re: 489 Family Sponsored?
Thanks very much old.sparkles...that is very helpful, and makes sense to branch it off (I only added it there being unfamiliar with the forum, and thought given there is a topic already, thought it would be appropriate to add to the end of it).
As I mentioned, I am hopeful to get maximum English scores though feel quite nervous given the number of attempts English native speaking people have had.
My points breakdown is:
Age = 25
Skilled employment = 5 years = 10
Qualifications = 10
Family sponsor = 10
If I score 20 points on IELTS/PTE, then 189 is definitely the route I would take. Time is of the essence really as I don't want to end up in the next age bracket (as will lose 10 points and then no chance for Oz dream), so I would hope a couple of attempts on the English test to get me through. Even if I do not score too well and get 10 points, then I would definitely consider 489 family sponsor as a second option
My only concern with this one is whether Plumber needs to be on WA Migration Skills list as well if a family is sponsoring me. Or does this apply to the 489 state nomination route?
Would you know the processing times for 189 and 489 visa? Would the 489 be a lower priority, therefore take longer?
Well done to you on your IELTS score! Hope I follow your steps. How long ago did you do it? I'll look at practice material as well.

and the list for family sponsored is the same as the 189 list so you should be okay on the occupation.
Processing wise, I would think they are similar, but information is given on the visa page
Not sure on the invitations for both though - google should give you a link to skill select, which has info on past invitation rounds.
