Default 457 medical insurance

I couldn't find anything here on record so thought I would ask the question.
Coming back on a 457 visa. My wife and daughter will be on the visa. However as I will be working FIFO they won't be coming with me but may well visit occasionally or come for a holiday. Do I still have to purchase medical insurance for them or can I just get for myself and add them if they visit?

At a guess, because they are included on the visa, they will need to be insured before the visa is issued

Yep, they will. Proof of insurance is required for visa grant.

Just found out that there is an insurance company that give rebates for times when people are not in the country.

I would also assume I can insure all at time of visa submission then remove them until they travel.

If they are not coming with you, then do you really even need them in the application. They could just get a holiday visa for a holiday.

In that case a 457 might well be easier She may have issues getting a visitor visa with you here working.
