We have had the 410 visa for 11 years now. Can't comment on the possibility of renewing from UK but with regard to health insurance - we have been insured by Medibank for most of the time here but moved to BUPA over 2 years ago to get a lower premium. However BUPA have decided to cease the cover we had - their top visitors cover - and substitute another policy. Only problem was 60% premium increase! Yes 60%. We have now found HBF and they offer similar cover to BUPA but at much lower price. We also checked with Medibank, in case they were competitive, and were told that they no longer offer cover for 410 visa. They may still cover existing policyholders. So in summary we know of 2 companies who offer cover for the 410 visa - Medibank and HBF. Top cover at HBF is going to be $8500 per year for couple in mid 70's.

Overseas Visitors Health cover.
That's the good news.
Unfortunately you can now only have the very basic cover, so there are lots of things you won't be covered for.
If you go into Medibank private it brings up what is or isn't covered.

Hope that helps
On the Medibank website there is information about Overseas Visitors Cover but there is also this statement -
"Please note that if your visa is subject to Condition 8501 this cover may not be suitable."
Condition 8501 is a requirement for visa 410 and relates to "adequate" health insurance.

Hi

I am considering retiring to Australia in very near future but finding increasing difficulty in finding fully comprehensive private medical insurance cover. Would appreciate any advice. Kind regards

Thanks for your information which is reassuring to us as we had just found H B F ourselves online. We have signed up to it and have the confirmation now to include with our Visa Application which we hope to post to Hobart this weekend. HBF have confirmed in writing that it covers the 8501 specification which is a stipulation for the 410 visa. Our cost is a little less per year than yours

Sorry about that the message went before we could finish. Our lower Cost maybe because we are under 70 years old. The insurance is pretty comprehensive.
We will let everyone know what reply we get from Hobart whenever that will be. Thanks once again.

On what basis are you planning to retire to Australia? Do you have a visa or are you a citizen?

No Dorothy, I will be coming over under a retirement visa. But I was looking at medical insurance that would also cover GP fees and medication, but I believe, happy to be corrected, that in Oz you will only get a percentage of your costs refunded and must bear the rest yourself?

Thank you to everyone for the help and information in our attempt to renew our 410 Visa. Our Visa expired in 2008 as we left Australia to return to the UK and we have NOT returned since. After reading the information on the Border Control website we hoped to renew our 410 Visa even though we were in the UK. We were unable to make any contact with the appropriate office in HOBART and did not get much help from the operators on the 131 helpline number. We completed the form 1383, included Police Checks etc and after some searching arranged health insurance in AUSTRALIA with HBF that complied with 8501 requirements and posted all to HOBART which arrived ok. After thinking we would be in for a long wait it took only 4 working days for us to get an e-mail out of the blue to confirm that our Visa had been renewed for 10 years which is confirmed on the new VIVO site. Hope this helps someone else in the future.
