Lightbulb OWP - Private Health Insurance or OHIP?

Hello everyone,

I am being sponsored by my common law partner under the spousal sponsorship and am also applying for an open work permit for while we wait. I am currently on an IEC and am told I will have 'implied status' as soon as I submit.

My question to you is:
On my open work permit application, it requests proof of insurance for the intended duration of my extended stay (the duration of my open work permit before I get my PR). I am currently eligible for OHIP as I have worked with my employer for over a year. Will this insurance cut it? Or will I have to get private health care insurance?

If so, can anybody recommend any cheap insurance companies? I don't need all the bells and whistles (skiing, snowboarding etc) I just want to be able to stay in Canada with my new family!

Any help with this would be much, much appreciated

J

If you have OHIP then you don’t need private insurance except for perhaps venturing out of country, if you don’t have such insurance coverage through your employer.

You will be applying for a new open work permit, not an extension. An IEC work permit can't be extended. https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration...nd-change.html

Provided you apply for a new open work permit (I presume you are applying 'inland' for spousal sponsorship) you won't need insurance cover.
