Default Open work permit

Hi all I have a quick question. My husband has an open work permit for calgary area. Under "conditions" the 3rd condition states:- unless authorized, Prohibited from attending any Educational institution, or taking any academic, Professional or vocational training course.
So my question is, can he take a class 1 driving course to become a truck driver whilst on this Permit or is that classified as vocational training?
We are just about to apply for PR we just waiting for spanish police clearance before we go into EE pool.

IMHO no study permit would be required for that type of course so he would be OK. The 3rd condition is for studying at Designated Learning Institutions where study permits are required or taking other courses where one is required.

It does state though, 'any' educational institution and prohibits professional training and a Class 1 would be considered professional training, possibly vocational. Unlike a class 5 or 6 that could be recreational.

About Professional Transport Driver Training School
Registered as a Vocational School for professional training.

Oh no now your totaly confusing me. Maybe like FL says its only for the institutions where you would have to apply for a study visa.

Where do you think i can find the answer.

Training, vocational
“Vocational training” is generally preparation for a specific vocation in industry, agriculture or trade. Vocational training generally includes technical skills training, organizational skills training, and basic skills training. Vocational training may be offered through on-the-job programs, by unions in conjunction with businesses, by community colleges or universities in conjunction with a specific industry, and by private career colleges.
Example: Quality control, mechanics, and new technology.

Found this on the CIC website under TF work permits so i think this means no we have to wait until we get PR

My opinion is the same as FL’s. Your permit authorizes you to work. A work permit in and of itself does not authorize you to study a professional, academic or vocational program in Canada as it clearly tells you.

For that you need a study permit which you can only get if you are studying at a particular type of institution (a DLI). However, there is an exception to this rule: if your program of study is less than six months, you don't require a study permit (authorization) to study as you can see here:

Study in Canada: Visas, Work and Immigration for International Students

I have never seen a study permit issued to a person who has come to Canada to be a Class 1 HGV driver. I have denied them work permits on the basis that they did not hold a Class 1 licence and were taking the test in Canada.

I looked at one school in BC with those type of courses and it was not a DLI. The course seemed to be about 80 hours. I agree with your post #2.

But you might just want to get a Class 1 Licence for the sake of it.

Is it any different to taking a Class 5 test - or does that mean you want to work as a taxi driver?

It might be more fun that a motorbike...

Was this ever cleared up?
I am just wondering whether there was an option for my husband to do something like this to increase our chances of staying? He is on an Open Work Permit
