Locals among 65 busted in Canada, U.S.
AN OTTAWA stockpile of a chemical used to make the drug speed is at
the centre of an international drug sting by the RCMP and the U.S. Drug
Enforcement Agency.
Yesterday, police on both sides of the border arrested 65 people -- 11
in Canada -- as part of an 18-month operation dubbed Northern Star.
Two of the suspects are from Ottawa.
RCMP say the investigation revealed massive quantities of
pseudoephedrine (PSE) were being manufactured in Montreal, stockpiled in Ottawa and
then smuggled into the U.S. through various border crossings in Quebec
and Ontario.
PSE is used in the production of methamphetamine, also known as speed.
The PSE stockpiled in an Ottawa storage locker could have produced 300
million doses of the drug.
Police said the seizure represents one of the largest in Canadian and
American history.
The RCMP also discovered a clandestine lab in Montreal and conducted
searches in cities across Canada.
The investigation targeted the entire methamphetamine-trafficking
process, including suppliers of chemicals used to make the drug, chemical
brokers, transporters, manufacturers, distributors, and money launderers.
EXECUTIVES TARGETED
Agents targeted six executives from the Quebec-based chemical companies
G.C. Medical Products, Formulex, and Frega Inc., officials said.
The executives allegedly sold bulk quantities of the key ingredient
pseudoephedrine to methamphetamine manufacturers in the United States.
In Canada, arrests occurred in Montreal, Ottawa, Quebec City and
Vancouver. According to investigators, brokers in Chicago, Cincinnati,
Detroit, and Los Angeles arranged for bulk shipments from Canada, most of
which entered the United States through Detroit in tractor-trailers.
The chemical was often hidden beneath legitimate products such as
bottled water and bubble gum, they said.
About 108 million tablets of pseudoephedrine were seized that
apparently originated from Frega, based in Levis, Que.
"Operation Northern Star has disrupted a major pseudoephedrine pipeline
from Canada and sent a clear message to pharmaceutical companies that
they will be held criminally responsible for dispensing their products
in the United States for illegal use," said Michael Chertoff, assistant
attorney general of the Justice Department.
It marked the fourth in a series of investigations targeting illegal
diversion and imports of pseudoephedrine.
Ibrahim Balshed, 52, of Ottawa, is facing several charges in relation
to the possession, exporting and conspiracy to export PSE.
Abdel Rahman Hanhan, 45, is facing one count of conspiracy to export a
controlled substance.

Syria Outflanks U.S. Warmongers
Even before the smoke has cleared in Iraq, Bush regime operatives began threatening Syria about having alleged weapons of mass destruction(WMD) and lending support to Iraq. In concert, the Sharon regime in Israel is making other demands. These events were, of course, foretold.
But Syria responded with an olive branch rather than a rebuke, proposing a WMD-free zone in the region to be presented as a resolution in the UN Security Council. Given that Israel probably possesses most such weapons in the Mid-east it's unlikely they and their sponsor, the U.S., would support such a measure. Not surprisingly,the U.S. corporate media has given Syria's proposal minimal coverage, focusing instead on U.S. propaganda and bellicose remarks by Bush and Secretary of War, Rumsfeld.
