Default (Grand)Parents

Hello everybody,

I have a question.

If I move to Canada (because of marrying a Canadian citizen, I'm British).

How long would I have to wait to (apply to) bring my parents over from England? Would I also be able to apply for my grandparents to come (in their late 70s)? What is the criteria?

Also, my mother has a very good professional background, my dad doesn't, both are British - moved from India decades ago, would they stand a better chance by applying by themselves or wait for me? They are in their 50s, is age a factor?

If they apply for a Super Visa it would take several months. Took 6 months for ours. We have since applied for permanent residence...looks like that's taking approx 3 years at present.

Use the search engine above to search this forum for Super Visa...there are a few helpful threads.

Health is more of a factor than age...although the older one gets one's health generally starts to deteriorate. Your income is also a factor.

Just to add to Jerseygirl's response, you wouldn't be able to sponsor your parents for PR until you have resided and worked for 3 years, as you have to show proof of income for the 3 years prior to applying. They could, as Jerseygirl mentioned, apply for a Supervisa in the interim.

You can read more here:

How can I show proof of income to sponsor a parent or grandparent?

Family sponsorship

If they are interested in applying for PR under their own steam, they should have a read through the CIC Express Entry / Provincial nominee's pages. Depending on which Province you will be settling in they may be able to get Provincial nomination from having family living there (I believe Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Newfoundland, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia have family streams) but it would depend on the age cut off for each.
