Question general advice wanted

So i am currently living and working in Vancouver, i started my two year IEC visa in September from England.
I have secured a good job at plumbing company, here in Coquitlam. Recently i have been trying to look into how i can progress to become a qualified plumber while Im here.
I assume theres restrictions to studying as i am here on a work permit, but how do apprenticeships fit into this?
also any advice on routes to take to apply for citizenship eventually? I live here with my Canadian girlfriend, long term we would like to stay here in Canada.
I have worked in trades for a few years but am not qualified, i have A-levels as my highest education. I previously played professional rugby, i retired early through injury, i no longer play.
My girlfriend and i had lived together in England for six months before she had to move back as her visa had expired. We currently live together at her parents house.
would love any advice on where to start and what to do. could someone point me in the right direction?
Thanks.

1. Registered apprentices in BC must be a Permanent Resident or Citizen.
2. If you and your girlfriend are a committed couple, you should look into Common/law sponsorship after living together for at least 1 year. See:Apply to sponsor your spouse, partner or children

Your easiest route to PR is through spousal sponsorship, but you need to qualify as commonlaw which means one year of living together unbroken... so the 6 months you spent living together before you separated won't count towards the 12 months.

Read the wiki page -- if you decide to go down this road you need to start getting your relevant paperwork in order to prove common-law status.
