Finally got PR now help with Son Sponsorship please
Hi
So we arrived in alberta canada dec 2013 we just received our PR acceptance letter so did the drive to the border last night to activate it... the guy we spoke to confused us and just wondering if anyone here has experience or help...
We have my stepson who is 19 and in england on our PR acceptance letter as NON-Accompaning dependant (he was 18 when we started the process) he did the medical etc
But now he is 19 he is classed (as far as we can make out) as a non dependant child ... so when we search how to sponsor him it doesn't seem to give an answer for how we do it ... as he is no longer a dependant and not a different relation so we are getting very confused ... are we able to sponsor him? If so how? Or where could i find more info about this and the process/timeline/costs??
Thanks for any help

Unfortunately, as he's not classed as a dependent child, you have no way of sponsoring him at the moment, so he'd need to sort out his own visa and try and find a way to get over. Take a look at the IEC visa, which would get him 2 years on an open work permit, if he wants to go soon then don't delay as the program for this year is already open and visas have more than half gone (there are only 5000 available each year).
Also keep an eye on news on the CIC website, as it's possible that the age of dependents may be raised later this year, so then you could sponsor him - although he'd still need to be a dependent even if he's then young enough (i.e. no common-law spouse etc).
And sorry to use you as a lesson, but just for the sake of anybody reading, this is why you should *always* put your children on your PR app as accompanying, even if they don't think they'll use it, once they get PR they have approx 4 years to move, so plenty of time to make their minds up.

Thank you ...
The reason we were not able to put accompanying was because his mother did not want him to leave the country and we were told she would have to sign a letter agreeing to it

Good luck with finding another visa route for him.
