Default Common-law

Hi All,

I am a UK citizen and my girlfriend is a Canadian Citizen, i will be returning to the UK in January and she will follow a couple of months after, we plan on living together the entire time we are there and after a year we will be applying for common-law.

My question is, can we live together in the UK for a year, do the entire application from the UK and then return to Canada once its been approved and i can land as a permanent resident and start working straight away?

thanks.

What if we live in a friends house and rent a room there for a year instead of getting our own lease. How could we prove living together then?

We could do bank accounts and maybe a utility bill or too but nothing bigger than that.

I'd suggest you have a read of the Wiki article, it has lots of information about supporting evidence for Common Law applications.

Awesome, thankyou guys.

What if we go travelling around europe for 6 months? we will be staying together obviously but it will probably be hostels and hotels, would that still be accounted for?

It's fine to go travelling. You just have to prove that you are travelling together. If you are going to be separated at all during your travels then that might cause issues, but if you are doing thew hole trip together then you are fine. Again, keep receipts with everything, and as much as possible have both your names on it (though for hotels it's usually just in one name, so maybe just alternate bookings so it;s obvious you both were on the trip).
