How long does it take for the application to reach NS and be stamped as received (ie to get the "lock in date").

We are sooo close!! If we wait until 23rd April to post it, ie the exact date one year of employment is up - and the new List is announced before the application is received by NS....

If it takes a week to get there and be stamped - could we send it a week early, so that when received, we have our one year?

Do they take holidays from work into account when calculating the one year? We are on as college instructor, who are employed 52 weeks a year, but work 39.

Send it by FEDEX or UPS then you can prove the date someone signed for it at the CIO Office.

Having said that i think it also depends on where you are in Canada, OH has been in touch with a few companies looking for IT ( broad term i know ) towards Ottawa and NS there still seems to be jobs there ?


Suppose its the same all over depends on your skills and on the company.
also OH company are taking on more IT here and at great rates which is a great sign in the city,

I remember when the 2008 list was on the cards and there was general mayhem and panic from people applying,

I really hope it doesn't delay the applications even longer esp not those still waiting in the old system ( selfish i know but feel we have waited long enough already )

I'm just wondering if we can send a week in advance, anticipating that it will take a week to get there? It really is THAT close for us (although if they count his work as 39 weeks and not 52 then we are scuppered regardless).

We're also applying as 4131: College and Other Vocational Instructors.

I would have thought that as you are employed continually for that period that it would count as a full year and besides which most College instructors I know do extra work (marking and lesson planning) for their job in their holidays anyway.

Our own situation is a little different, we've gotta wait until the OH's qualifications have first been evaluated by ICAS, I just really hope they pull their finger out and get it back to us soon, and that we can get it in to NS before the cut off.

If not we just have to pray that it stays on the list

Being a bit nosy here, but why do you have to get his qualifications assessed by ICAS?

Are you borderline on points?

We'll have to work on the basis that being employed for a year is fine - otherwise the same would apply to other occupations, I guess, who get four or five weeks' leave.

you mention that the new regulations might also affect how categories 2 & 3 are processed. As an international student in Canada, I'm interested to hear what other people have to say -- do you think we'll continue being eligible to apply after having studied here for the past 12 months?

Don't worry, I don't think you're being nosy!

He is a vocational instructor rather than a college instructor, but his main qualification is specialist to his field which is Market research theory and practice. It is accredited by the Market Research Society and is called MRS level 5 and is equivalent to an NVQ level 5. But as CIC are likely to have never heard of an MRS level 5 we were advised that it was prudent to get it asessed in order to save time in the long run.

I understand the latest minimum fund requirements have been set by CIC
and will be vaild from Jan 1st - Dec 31st

If you meet the minimum requirements my advice for what its worth would be to go for it and apply like christmasoompa says you'd still have some time before you have to prove funds. What ever you decide all the best

Well they won't examine his qualifications initially, as they will just check the application is complete and he is on The List. You just state what he has got, no need to give a Canadian equivalent.

I thought ICAS had a turnaround standard of 10 working days? That would still be well before the consultation period ends on 16 April.

Even if it is going to take longer than that, you could send in the application anyway, and if the worst happens and ICAS's assessment means the qualifications wouldn't get you to 67 points, then you can withdraw and get your fee back as it will take a while to get in process (when you won't get the fee back).

Unless.... you anticipate a really long time to get ICAS's response?!!! How long did they say it would take?

Oh bum, sorry. Remembered last year they announced the changes in February, and thought they took effect from April, didn't realise they announced them two months after they'd been brought in (?!?).

Now you've mentioned it I realise the amounts have gone up since the end of last year, doh!!

Still, good news for those applying now.
