Default Canadian Passport

Anyone know the length of time required to be left on the Canadian Passport in order to re-enter Canada without issue ?

My understanding is that is you can show you are a Canadian citizen, you don't even need a passport.

I have a Canadian passport which expires in January next year. Wasn't sure about the 3 month / 6 month rule. Entering Spain on the other end is no problem as I have a UK passport expiring 2026

While technically true, an airline is not going to let you board without a passport. And if you are a dual national like Tangram then the will require you to have your Canadian passport because you can't apply for the necessary ESTA on your British passport as a Canadian citizen.

Tangram - suggest you a) look on the respective airline's website for any issues and b) ping Former Lancastrian, our resident CBSA officer for advice.

The passport only needs to be valid.

One of our acquaintances travelled to and from America for years on an out-of-date Canadian passport. He only got a new one when the Americans started getting antsy about it.

But that was driving: as mentioned, airlines probably wouldn't let you board.

Is it considered valid if it has expired?

Not by an airline. An expired passport is still proof of citizenship at the border though.

Yes, that's what I was once told at the air border.

This thread can be closed. My passport is and will be valid ( as stated several times ) when flying in both directions so I'm good, that coupled with my UK passport I think I'm fine.

What is the current best advice with regard to dual citizenship and using passports to travel home to the UK?

I am British but moved to Canada and have since acquired Canadian citizenship. I've always used my British passport for all travel, but since Canada changed the rules in 2016/2017, my understanding is that I need to use a Canadian passport to travel back into Canada. So how does this work if I want to enter the UK on my British passport?

Is this correct:

Leg 1: Leave Canada going to the UK:
Exit Canada: Show Canadian passport
Enter UK: Show British passport

Leg 2: Leave UK going to Canada:
Exit UK: Show Canadian passport
Enter Canada: Show Canadian passport

Thanks
