22yo joiner looking for more info
Hi all. Just looking for more info on the first steps to moving to Canada hopefully in the next couple of years.
Since leaving school in 2010 I have become an apprentice trained joiner and have worked in various sides to woodwork. Including site joinery, windows, doors and staircase manufacturing and exhibition builder. I'm currently working at a company called Stageone in York. Stageone is a worldwide production company. My job role is based in the workshop mainly, which I build items from drawings to a high standard then go and fit up the jobs. I have been studying things and realised that my job role would be under cabinet fitting/ manufacturing. I haven't had first hand experience in what Canadians call cabinet fitting, (Britain call it kitchen fitting) but I have basically done the same job but in a different circumstance. I can't really find any roles in the job bank for production joiners or exhibition builders.
I have a girlfriend that had recently moved back to England a year ago from Alberta having lived there for 8 years. We have lived together for almost a year but only her name is on the house for rent ect. Would I have to marry her for both of us to immigrate?
Would it be best to see a specialist and go through a company or off of my own back?
Thanks in advance

Hi, and welcome to BE.
Your gf could sponsor you if you married, yes, but she could also sponsor you if you lived together as spouses for a year or more and could prove it. It sounds like you're just coming up to that year, so if you can prove that you've lived as husband and wife, then that might be the way to go. If only her name is on the rental contract then that's not ideal, but plenty of other things would prove you're living in a common-law relationship so think what else you have that could prove it - joint bank account, both names on utility bills, wills naming each other as beneficiaries (or life insurance doing the same), names on each others car insurance, etc, etc.
If you don't qualify as common-law spouses, then another option to look at is the IEC visa, which is a 2 year open work permit for those aged 30 and under. I think you've probably just missed out on this year's program unfortunately (although it could be worth a try if you can apply ASAP, there are still some visas left, just not a lot), if you don't get in under this year then you could apply when the 2018 program opens.
No need to use a consultant unless you have complicated circumstances (criminal record, medical issues etc), most people on the forum do it themselves.
HTH a bit, best of luck.

Thanks a lot!
As far as I know she didn't get residency because of family issues. So if I could get a sponsorship would that be the way to go? If that's the right way?

Sorry, I assumed your gf was a Canadian citizen or PR. Just checking, but she was definitely in Canada legally? It's just unusual to spend 8 years there without being a PR - you might want to check on what her exact status was when she lived there. If it turns out that she was a PR, then she could sponsor you. But if not, she can't sponsor you at all and IEC is probably your only option.
Good luck.
Good luck.

Sounds like you would both need to apply for an IEC when it reopens next year (or try this year if you can be very quick - as said above, not many visas left). But given your gf's complicated immigration history, it might be worth consulting an immi lawyer to make sure she's ok to try and return to Canada. Also, how old is she and what is her parents status in Canada now? There's a possibility they could sponsor her later this year depending on the answers to those questions, but only if you're not deemed common-law spouses. Again, it might be something a lawyer would be able to advise you on.

Not sure what a '10 year visa' is, hopefully the overstay will be forgiven for your gf though and she's not been issued with anything like a Removal Order?

But do you know what visas i.e. just temp work permits, or do they have PR, or something else? They were incredibly lucky to be granted visas again having overstayed! And how old is your gf?
