I saw that this morning. I wonder how long he'll take to getting "THE LIST" issued.
I'll say last week of November.... any other suggestions?

Wow! That's as if the UK government had appointed Nick Griffin Minister of Immigration. It's OK if you're a straight white male applicant I suppose.

Earlier this year legislation was passed that introduced another filter that would be applied to permanent residence applications that were submitted via the skilled worker route and that were not backed up by pre-arranged employment.
Previously the primary filter had been the points test. From now on the applicant also will have to be in an occupation that is in extreme demand in Canada if his/her application is to be considered.
Applications that have been received since the end of February 2008 have been accumulating in a huge in box without being processed, while everyone waits for the new list of occupations in extreme demand to be published.
The previous Minister of Citizenship and Immigration her staff consulted with the provinces and did a bunch of other research to come up with a list. The Department's website states that the list will be published by the end of the fall (autumn). Technically, that gives them until December 20th to live up to that statement.
Note that skilled worker applications that are backed up by pre-arranged employment are being processed. It's only the ones that have been submitted since the end of Feb 2008 and that are not backed up by pre-arranged employment that are in limbo until the list is published.

But, in a perverse way, the Conservative Party's immigration policy helps people who are lining up to immigrate to Canada. The policy, whatever you may think of the Conservative Party in general and the new Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism (heh heh) in particular, is designed to address the backlog of applications and to let applicants know where they stand relatively soon.
The Liberal Party's immigration policy ground the process down to glacial speed.

I had a similar reaction. I nearly choked when I saw the appointment.

I hardly think one can expect lunacy to be ended by putting Jason Kenney in charge.

Granted a policy of messing people about interminably is not a good one, but Mr. Kenney is the man who said he was in favour of homosexual men getting married - so long as it was to women. Thus we might expect him to say he's in favour of speeding the applications of certain types of workers so long as it's to Australia.
I hardly think one can expect lunacy to be ended by putting Jason Kenney in charge.

He's not the only Tory who holds that idiotic opinion. Maurice Vellacott, for one. I don't like to think of the mischief that someone with a dim view of gay marriage could cause for homosexuals wanting to live with their Canadian partner, especially now that the Minister has a larger amount of discretion than previously. The words Dracula and bloodbank spring to mind.
